if you upload a picture from your hard drive, it only puts a link on the page which will open in another screen (presuming you have hotlinks set to open in a new browser window).

If the picture is located on the web and it's hosted by a service that allows hotlinking, then you can put the URL for the picture between the image tags using the IMG button on the toolbar above the post-reply box. That picture will show in your thread.

Some services that DO NOT allow hotlinking (meaning all that will show is a red x) are Geocities, Tripod, Angelfire, and pretty much every other free service out there.
