Why Writers Withdraw Stories

AsylumSeeker is a close friend of mine. And I would like to explain his reasoning.

AS has written a bunch of stories. Over three hundred. Most were intended to be single entries. But AS, he's a nice guy. And when readers asked for more chapters he tried what he could. But with over 300 stories out there he was overwhelmed with requests. By comments, feedback, and email.

The point is don't overwhelm writers you enjoy. Or more can do what he did. Writers need time and space. No comments, feedback, or emails requesting, demanding even, additional chapters.

Unless you want those stories to go away.

And you have

ML, gave Mama a chance. Still here. DEAL with it.

Don't see the reasoning here. They are his stories to do what he likes with, that's fair enough. But to say that he pulled them because people liked them so much they wanted more, doesn't make any sense.

He is the author, it's his decision whether to follow up a story or not. While not as prolific as AS I get requests for follow ups. Sometimes I do (usually because the characters are still running around in my head) and other times I don't.

AS needs to remember the old anti drug motto Just Say No

Seconding DeyaKen's advice: I hate saying "no" to anybody, let alone people who are giving me a sincere compliment, but it's a vital life skill. If you can't learn it you will get sucked dry, whether on Lit or somewhere else.

PS can you lend me ten bucks?

For pity's sake, don't discourage readers from giving positive feedback. It's perfectly acceptable to stop reading your feedback if you get overwhelmed, or pull stories if you no longer think they are good pieces of writing, or pull them if they are so popular you want to publish them for $ instead, but pulling stories because they get too much positive feedback is absurd.

Thread reality check. Although AS did request story deletion off and on for years, it was done as a "crying in my beer and taking my marbles and going home" threat, not a serious request and certainly not for the reasons given. Finally, his wish was granted--both as AS and as Flyer333, which also had some stories under that account--and the stories--and AS--were pulled by Laurel, not AS, which no doubt came as a great surprise and shock to AS. They were pulled for reasons having nothing to do with the stories posted to Literotica. We'll see how long the Flyer33 alt, and subsequent ones, last. But it won't have anything to do with Literotica stories.

What might be a shame here would be if AS didn't have his stories saved. He was a popular author here--for his stories.

Agreed.

AS having his account blow up and stories removes causes me to once again ponder a question that many here have asked since long before my time here.

How the hell is Scouries still here? I know one of his alts was popped awhile back, but seeing scouries was the alt why not pop him?

AS made some strange posts and argued a lot, but he never started and maintained a thread mocking the loss of a woman's baby, or driven other authors off by lying about having sex with them.

Nor has AS ever repeatedly posted pics and links that led to malware infested sites that could ruin someone's computer.

Scouries has done all that and more and still runs amok.

Am I the only one that thinks that's odd?

AS threatened to have his stories/account pulled/deleted for what, months, a year, more? He put it right in his posts that he was going to ask/tell Laurel to pull his entire account.

I don't follow scouries, but the times I read his posts, he never mentioned asking to have his account pulled/deleted.

Seems like it's a matter of getting what you ask for.

Yep, AS repeatedly asked on the forum (probably never directly in a formal PMed request) that both his stories and his account be deleted. To my knowledge, Scouries never has. I don't know as AS thought about that extending to his alts and stories by his alts as well, but at least one AS Alt, with stories, Flyer333, has also been deleted.

I agree that Scouries (and LC's friend, Freddy) should have just been deleted--stories and all (you can always come back with a posting account; it's not so easy to get your story file reinstated) no later than the dead baby incident. But they were both being outrageous even before that.

Ironic that whenever AS said "delete my account"-and I know he did many times- he was not really in his right mind.

Scouries is always in his right mind, meaning all his nonsense is done with 100% intent, but since he'll never say "Hey, delete me?" he'll do whatever he wants?

Guess that's the definition of a free speech site then.

I also notice he's smart enough to pull his stunts in un-moderated forums further proving he is fully aware of what he does.

One of Scouries alts got kicked off (of an unmoderated board) for stuffing threads with repeated posts, so it can happen. Otherwise, the difference does seem to be AS asking to be deleted (even if not meaning it) and Scouries not.

Oh, and I've heard of someone coming close to being kicked out for outing the true name of a poster more than once. (The posts were deleted.). That might still happen too.

That's happened multiple times in the GB most notably to LJ Reloaded (not his original ID) who by the way has a wordpress blog and if anyone posts on it there is a way to track back to their IP and get their real name.

So a tip to you and anyone else, never post on someone's word press blog.

As for the real name? Short of an instance of someone having the technology to get the name-and I suspect some here do- a poster would have to give their real name in order for it to "get around"

That person would either be stupid or just desperate to try to prove something, no?

End of the day, its a shame about AS's stories. A lot of people enjoyed them.

People leave bread-crumb trails to their identity every time they post. But over time they drip drip drip personal info others can compile into a real revelation.

I've found most post over and over about things they're not and wish they were even, as was recently proven in the GB, their gender.

The anonymous internet gives people the chance to be what they wished instead of what they are. A haven for reinventing one's own existence.

I'm simply hiding in plain site as I'm a direct descendent of the original Lovecraft.:D

Again, that AS's stories are lost are his own fault. He repeatedly asked that they be withdrawn. Scouries hasn't done that.

But it would be delicious, I think, and also beneficial to the site, if Scouries woke up some morning with his accounts, his threads, and his stories here erased. He'd have to rebuild from the ground up.

I generally agree. I have had Scouries on ignore from the beginning, and was warned about him by Daniellekitten. So I don't know most of what he posts, or what he did before I started reading the forums. If half of what I've heard is true, though, I don't know why they tolerate what seems to be abuse of the site and many authors. He may not have asked to have his account deleted but it sounds like he deserves to.

Danielekitten provides another cautionary tale here for anyone trying the "accommodate me or I'm taking my marbles and going home" ploy. She was very popular as an author, at the head of the favorite list, and quite likely a big commercial draw for Literotica. She threw down the gauntlet: "Ban Scouries or I delete my stories and leave." Literotica let her delete her stories and leave.

When did this happen? Because I just checked her page and she has stories dating back to 2008, including one posted this February.

I'd say late 2006 or early 2007. She pulled all of them at the time--despite a few of us saying we didn't think an ultimatum would work here. Scouries did razz her to distraction. There was a male author who did the same thing--for the same reason--at the same time, and is just gone. She dropped from "way ahead" first place as the favorite author here on the official listing to the current #21.

As far as Scouries is concerned, the Web site is commercially short sighted, I think. Despite what the forum rules say will be tolerated on the forum (and the rules certainly are ignored in other areas--for instance, posting of stolen copyrighted images--and advertising competing sites. One of the regulars here actually campaigned on the forum a mass exodus to another site, and wasn't banned, as the rules said she would be.), just erasing Scouries's accounts and his threads and his stories without notice would, I think, be quietly cheered here, it would enhance the commercial value of the site, and it would be a strong signal that there are unspoken limits and several other posters would be more careful and less outrageous in their postings--at least for a while. Lying about perks the web site gives him is justification enough to just erase Scouries.

As far as why writers withdraw stories from here, I believe the biggest reason is harassment--which the rules here also say are a banning offense.

I reported you for your obnoxious, totally over the top whining again, as well as for calling ML a c. Go whine in the AH. I'm sure they would appreciate you there.

Status inflation is common, and oftentimes the culprits don't need the boost/boast.

But I'm speaking of personal info. The other day a regular poster revealed her weight. Put all the breadcrumbs together and you got a loaf.
