Why Would Researchers Do This?

Health 'cover'?

Financial gains can often heavily outweigh much hoped for benefits. This case is an example of an individual. In all cases the fact that money is a prime mover in the equation is easily hidden behind the fact of the benefits of medical research. I'm not saying that real concerns for our well-being don't exist. They most certainly do; but big business tends to be more concerned with profit margins (the recent case in South Africa [I think I'm right about the country] making cheap drugs available, and the medical companies trying to intervene comes to mind). There are more sides to this argument than I'm citing here of course, but thought I'd point out one relevant view.

The worst part of this story is that the good doctor now has a private practice. Unbelievable.

The almighty dollar and his name being recognized rather than no money and a failure associated with him.

It's sad that those rank first in some people's lives but it's also too true.
