Why throw around personal insults about someone's looks?

But given that very, very few here have actually seen what other people look like - and even less have met irl - how can people just throw out insults about someone's appearance?
You haven't got a clue as to whether your insult applies.... are they just for the sake of saying something nasty?
And if so, what's the point of that?
