When one tries to get into a private chat with someone in the room, it says only conference invitees can post.

My first question is what is a conference in the context of chat?
Second, how to get invited to one?
And maybe related to the second, how does one set up a conference?
Any clarification would be welcome.

I think what you're talking about is when you get disconnected from Lit Chat (which happens a fair bit as Lit Chat is quite jealous about you looking at other tabs etc) - when you reconnect, you only get reconnected to the Lobby and any other rooms you were in before you get disconnected will still show, but you don't see new messages, any new joiners or leavers in those rooms, and if you try and PM someone in those rooms I think it says something about not being a conference member. Just rejoining the room by finding it in the room list and clicking to join should sort it.

If you look back through the posts in the chat support thread getting disconnected a lot its a well known issue and frustration, but something the mods can't do anything about. The tips in this thread for telling your browser not to put the Lit Chat window to sleep do help though -

Thanks for the reposne. Just one clarification, by tabs do you mean browser tabs or the char room tabs in LIt Chat?

Other browser tabs / other browser windows....

It's something to do with the browser putting the Lit Chat tab to sleep when it's not got the focus, and that means you get disconnected from chat
