Why is everyone angry at this?

In a word, religion. Nothing whips the masses into a frenzy like a slight against it.

Organized religion has been a problem for me for the longest time, having been responsible for some of the greatest wrongs against humanity. Start with the Old Testament and follow it to the present day. Always somebody or other trying to "educate" the heathens.

I have no problem with my faith, just with others trying to tell me what it should be.

Id say its due to the fact that it resembles more of what the KKK do towards African Americans than anything.

As for religion, God set fire to a bush, that wooden cross was at one time a bush!
Sorry, I couldnt stop myself!

what did they expect her to change her show for one country???? oh come ON!!!

Madonna darlin, We'll be seein you in 2 weeks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Woo hoooooo :nana: :nana:

I don't regard flag burning as acceptable. It's a sign of extreme disrespect.

But that doesn't mean I want to make it illegal. I regard freedom of speech as more important than worship of country.

Brav-fucking-O!

Apparently the Catholics are under the impression that Christ's Crucificion was the last one? The grand finale? The fat lady singing ... from a chunk of wood with big spikes through her hands and feet? Are they saying that every crucifiction that came after Christ was disrespectful to their beliefs? Cause there were and have been shitloads of them since then, and Madonna's isn't even shedding blood.

(All of this is assuming that he existed in the first place. Never mind that no one has produced proof positive of that yet.)

Wouldn't that require her cross to be on fire in someone's front lawn?

*shrug* It's Rome and the Vatican. They be testy about their religion in the Vatican. It's kind of a big thing there. Ahd she's probably pleased as punch over their reaction. It's provocation for publicity - Madonna's favourite game.

And since she's not burning any Italian flags, I have no idea what they think about that.

So is belief in other abstracs, if you ask me. Like countries, sports teams, moon phases, races, corporations and movie stars. People put their faith in many different things. Why is your choice of belief right (and it's symbols sacred) and someone else's worthy of ridicule?

That's if she still wants to :p Don't forget - she spent the Sunday night before last with me...

I really enjoyed the crucifixion part of the concert. It was one of the few moments where she was still enough for you to get a really good look at her. So she used her body to represent a Christian icon in a concert in which lots of major religions were represented - so what? As religious harmony was one of the themes of the concert, I think it's wrong that the Vatican have kicked up a stink.

My other favourite part was when she pole danced. It was the first pole dance I'd ever seen. When she started I though she was just doing acrobatics, and had to have it explained to me. It turned out to be the most erotic thing I've ever seen :catroar:

I'm jealous, Fem ;)

Exactly.

Simply because I do not follow their faith, gives me no right to dismiss it as unworthy of respect.

I have many friends who are practising Christians. I wouldn't dream of insulting any of the symbols that are part of their belief, any more than I would dream of insulting them by disrespectful behaviour when attending one of their churches.

I on the other hand, could probably do a mock crucifiction, burn a flag, draw a Mohammed cartoon, or something else that might upset a believer, if I had, let's say, an artistic reason for it. But the only reason would be to quetion the symbol, not what it represent, because I don't give symbols that much power. A cross is not Christianity to me, it's two pieces of wood. Union Jack is not Britain to me, it's colored cloth.

But I'd also respect the right for anyone else to do the same to something that I hold dear.

Does Freedon Of Expression have a symbol? I'd mock it just to prove my point. ;)

I think the blasphemy is fairly obvious. Through the eyes of a culture that revolves around one particular crucifixion, a mock crucifixion of a pop-star is beyond disdainful. As angry as you might get watching your precious flag burn, multiply that exponentially as they witness the single-most recognized event in their history being recreated with glitter, sparkling lights, synthesized beats, and electric guitars, simply for the object of a crowd's entertainment.

I suppose if I were a Catholic living in or near Vatican City that I might feel a little upset also.

My personal opinion is that society, across the board, gives too much of a damn what others think and not enough of a damn about what they know of their own thoughts.

I don't believe people know much about their own thoughts. Introspection isn't a highly desired trait in Western society.

Agreed.
'Tis a shame.

I don't know about that. It seems to me the biggest problem with us is that we believe we're supposed to be deep, and thoughtful, and full of inspiring thoughts and emotionally moving ideas. When we're forced to realize we're just human, like everybody else, then we start looking for deeper meaning from a "higher power," whether that be God, or any number of them, or politics, or that sports team someone mentioned earlier. I personally feel that has something to do with why people get so emotional about their opinions. They've found something to say, so damnit, listen!

Again (although I'm not sure just how many times I've said this here--maybe millions, maybe never, who knows?) it seems to come down not to who we are, but a search for who we think we're supposed to be. Why be Bob Smith if he's not a rock star or a race car driver?

In short, socialization sucks.

That would have been a brilliant satirical post, if we didn't know you actual mean it. lol.

"Sorry, but I believe in my believes, leave their symbols alone. And screw everyone else's beliefs and their symbols, they're just something for people to believe in who don't have the guts to believe in themselves. Unlike my believes, they're swell."

And if you believe in nothing then you won't get hurt or upset because you have no symbols that you regard as holier than others symbols.

If Madonna burned the American flag as part of her act, how would we feel about it?

SOme people just have different ideas about what's sacred, is all.

Don't forget that a lot of the anger is directed at the fact that it's a WOMAN imitating the famous crucifiction of Jesus - a WOMAN! How DARE she? And what's wrong with her husband - why doesn't he keep her barefoot and pregnant in front of the stove, like a good husband should?

They're BOTH anti-Christ, I tell ya.
