Why is everybody so pissed about the U2 download from iTunes?

The Beatles were no great shit live....Trent Reznor's music is best heard recorded...Joni Mitchell always hated performing live...Sloan is terrible live...Boston never would have existed without a studio...the Beach Boys best works were all studio pieces.

It's simply not that simple.

Indeed, it is not, and that's why I stated my thoughts carefully to avoid anything that sounded like absolutes.

Of course, great music has been made in the studio. But great musicians will make great music in whatever manner is available to them. I'm talking about bringing up the curve generally. It's my premise that by my personal aesthetic the overall state of music would improve if the economics favored live performance more.

I think that there is a lot of concern about computer privacy right now, and that for a lot of people, the U2 download has become a symbol of that. It becomes a stand in for all the other things that may be snaking their way onto our phones and computers that we neither want nor requested.

Personally, I just think it's obnoxious marketing. It's the digital version of a squeegee guys. Yeah, they aren't asking you for anything, but you know they expect something.

As I said earlier, if anyone can do this and make it seem okay, it's Apple.

I trust Apple & U2 ....and think most do.

I think it's a stroke of genius.

(and....I didn't realize I had the U2 Album until this thread...cool, can't wait to listen to it!)

Well, it's got people talking about both Apple and U2, so I will grant you that point.

They also did that limited edition black iPod a few years ago, preloaded with the entire U2 catalog.

I haven't bought a U2 album since "October", because they haven't written anything new since then. (Nickleback Syndrome)

But I don't hate them...who could ever hate Bono?

The Edge has a sort of sleazy real estate development in LA, but even that is kinda cool.

.

I have a friend who hates Bono, but that's because he and his wife were on vacation in Negril and the wife disappeared. He found her lounging by the pool with Bono the next morning.

So he stole Bono's sunglasses.

That's a true story.

actually she looked extremely depressed.
we were all a little worried that she was just gonna slip under the water and take a deep breath .

and for the record, i can't guarantee that the vapid blonde with us that nite was debbie gibson. but it was def Tiffany, she performed a show earlier.

She was probably depressed that earlier she had to sing I Think We're Alone Now for the millionth time.

His blue sunglasses Nobel campaign was eye rolling cringe worthy.
Most of it is anymore. I admire the philanthropy and volunteerism but not everything related to those good deeds needs to be routed through celebrity status.

yes!! because that nasty anchovy juice gets everywheres!
I feel that way about pickles.

Mine downloaded automatically.

I had a message then congratulating me on having them.

U2 are the aids of music. Always around but never do anything good.
