The Beatles were no great shit live....Trent Reznor's music is best heard recorded...Joni Mitchell always hated performing live...Sloan is terrible live...Boston never would have existed without a studio...the Beach Boys best works were all studio pieces.
It's simply not that simple.
Indeed, it is not, and that's why I stated my thoughts carefully to avoid anything that sounded like absolutes.
Of course, great music has been made in the studio. But great musicians will make great music in whatever manner is available to them. I'm talking about bringing up the curve generally. It's my premise that by my personal aesthetic the overall state of music would improve if the economics favored live performance more.
