"Irish abortion debate flares over death of critically ill woman who was denied an abortion

DUBLIN (AP) — The debate over legalizing abortion in Ireland flared Wednesday after the government confirmed that a woman in the midst of a miscarriage was refused an abortion and died in an Irish hospital after suffering from blood poisoning.

Prime Minister Enda Kenny said he was awaiting findings from three investigations into the death of Savita Halappanavar, a 31-year-old Indian woman who was 17 weeks pregnant. Her case highlighted the legal limbo in which pregnant women facing severe health problems can find themselves in predominantly Catholic Ireland."

it really beggars belief. The third worlds largest bog, infested with more papists than bog wraiths wants to appear civilised.

Cromwell had the right idea.

That's crazy, but this is the twisted worldview of a Catholic. Their beliefs are perverse.

Welcome to a country where the religious fuckwits have far too much influence over governmental policy.

The Catholic Church has unfortunately turned it's focus on pregnant women. This is not the only occurrence of pregnant women dying because the church is playing God with a woman's life because she's pregnant. And it has already happened several times over here in the U.S. and recently in South America. Meanwhile many people don't seem to give a damn.

Where has it happened in America? That would be illegal here.

since america is also infested by irish papists, this should be no surprise.

Google it. Can't remember specific sources. I think one is RH Reality. They had the article on the 16 year old who died in S. America several months back.

You would have thought the doctors would have acted if the woman's life was in danger regardless.

This has weakened substantially in recent years. The Magdalene Laundries and
paedophile priest scandals have had a dramatic impact on the peoples attitude to Church influence on the state. Membership of the EU has also broadened public attitudes,a s has the womens movement. Ireland is becoming more like the pluralist nation it purports to be, albeit slower than they like to believe. The Taoiseach laid a wreath of laurel in Enniskillen last Sunday, the Tanaiste in Belfast.

I still have plenty of rellies in rural shitholes in the south. The cities may be modernising, not so the small towns and villages.

Accepted, also the economic situation set things back quite a bit. But interestingly SF didn't make the inroads they expected to. Even in the countryside.

Fine Gael will take some breaking in the farming communities.
