I believe it protects you as well, but as a protection for ourselves, it requires care in the handling of the mask. For example, if you get droplets from someone else on the mask and you then touch the outside of your mask with your hands and don't wash your hands, you could become infected. But since people are having such a hard time with just wearing them, trying to teach the masses how to remove them properly and not touch the mask once it's on would be hell. Those of us in the medical field feel a bit more protected when we go out with them because we know how to handle them. And I have hand sanitizer with me for when I remove the mask. Better safe than sorry.

I see impeached president trump has finally been convinced to endorse the wearing of masks to avoid the trump virus.
It amazes me that it has taken so long to get to this point.
It's a lot like wearing a bullet proof vest, it's a barrier between you and something bad that might just save your life. Nobody seems to regard the bullet proof vest to be an infringements of their freedoms.

I have been using a Lone Ranger mask for years

I like to wear a Lone Ranger mask at sex parties if the camera is rolling. So, I don't see the harm in wearing it when I go to Walmart.

You wouldn't want to wear an N95 for any length of time. They are suffocating. Personally I would like one of those shields some servers are using. I'm just not sure they cover enough. But they would be a lot more comfy, especially during the hot months.

N95 masks with exhaust valves are pointless anyway they were designed as dust masks and only filter incoming air. When you exhale the valve opens and your unfiltered breath goes straight out to contaminate anyone close enough. However, in Britain at least, they are still considered an adequate face covering for enclosed spaces and public transport.
