why does audio erotica so often suck?

People:

I've been reading, writing and viewing erotica for quite some time now.

I have to say that, for me, a good story or a good video are HUGE turn-ons. Even the bad ones do pretty OK by me.

But I find audio erotica to be so DULL. Phone sex is NOT, it's pretty exciting.

Do others also feel this way? Is it because human speech is the ONLY genuine method of live communication between people, and one has to be listening to a real person, and talking / communicating with a real person, to find the sound of a human voice a turn-on.

While we're reading a story or watching a video, we're passive recipients of stimulation, without any possibility of live interaction. Is this the difference, that video / written word erotica arouses our fantasies, while a human voice arouses the real person?

Would love to hear opinions.

Reading your story aloud requires two things. a) That you are a good enough writer. b) That you are a good enough actor.

This is not unique for erotica. Look at any audio book or public reading session. If the reader doesn't have "it", the result is ass-numblingy boring. That's why most authors have pro actors record their audio books.

Dialouge (like phone sex) is much more forgiving in that aspect than monolouge, since you get to take part and control the content and tempo of delivery.
