Why do you think so many Dictators and Leaders in History were mentally Ill?

I'll toss in here that the majority of royalty was inbred, which leads to mental illness.
That said, is there any proof that all of these people where mentally ill in a clinical sense? Or do you just mean they were sick?

History has proven that royalty breed with royalty......... and in a lot of instances, it is not uncommon for 1st cousins to marry and have children. Just because one's historical father is not related to the mother does not mean that the child is the product of the two........... a liazon between brother and sister have resulted in pregnancies all throughout history, and so the pregnant girl would be married off as a virgin very early into the pregnancy and the child would appear to be born "early"...........................

he's not really crazy, just a bloodyminded prick who will never succeed at any of his grand schemes. He's just smart enough to get everyone around him killed (does that remind anyone of certain childhood pals?) and yet survive himself.

But: I think madness provides a fierce energy, serves as a source of compelling vision (again, Saddam's vision is rather dim) and limitless commitment. If Hitler were at all normal, he would have started a religion or become a motivational speaker. Would've lived longer....

Perhaps it's our ability to view history with more objectivity and a clearer vision which puts so many leaders in the realm of mentally ill.


Although I would question whether mentally ill is the correct term, I prefer evil. I wouldn't want to place Hitler or Ghengis Khan in the same category as my friend who suffers from agoraphobia.

I don't necessarily think that insanity draws disciples- initially it is the charismatic personalities. But there is a famous saying...absolute power corrupts absolutely.
