Why do we need the guest feature?

I'm not bashing it, I'm just honestly wondering. Seems people only use it to troll and stir shit, and registered members get stuck with it when they forget to log in. Sure it can be used for humor but how often does that happen? And how often does someone pop in and make a legitimate comment/ask a question without registering? Maybe a couple times a month, out of all these people here. So...what good is it?

It provides a means for a newbie to decide if they want or expect to participate enough to create a registered persona.

By doing so, they can participate as guest and if they decide to drift away, Laurel & Manu are saved the space (overhead) of storing an inactive profile.

Not that much probably, but with 200,000 unique hits per day, it could begin to add up to some serious storage requirements if everyone was required to register just to make a single post.
