Why do we feel the need to segregate into

"newbies" and "regulars"....

Why can't we accept each person on a post to post basis. Who cares if the person has made one post or one thousand?

Every community needs time to get used to a new memeber just like every newbie needs time to find thier place in the community.

Until they find their place and people become used to them, come for feel comfortable with them they remain newbies.

Because newbies are generally quite stupid and should be treated with scorn until they have proven that they have something valuable to say.

As someone with over 5000 posts, you should fucking know this.

Everyone is treated equal as far as I'm concerned. Maybe because the regulars know each other they tend to chat together more because they know some of the others thoughts from past posts.

As in life, I think people like to group people. It starts young and just gets more detailed as we get older.

On the playground...

bullies, jocks, stoners, theater types, etc.

At work...

professional, non-professional, blue collar, white collar, etc.

I think it helps people make sense of where they belong in the social order of things. I don't necessarily agree with it but that seems to be what I've observed. I see an online community as no different. Newbies, regulars, revered by all, flirts, jerks, etc.

I have met some arrogant bastards on this board and off it.

For Christ's sake PC what is your problem.

 hmmmm, maybe it's just me being stupid, but these kinds of threads REALLY make me feel dumb for starting a thread about this kind of shit.

See? Newbies aren't the only ones who don't feel so good about this place sometimes.

PC is just joking, calm down mig!

People are social, categorizing animals. We always feel the need to put people and things into neat, sortable groups. It helps us keep track. The thing is, we do this despite the mountains of evidence that says it doesn't work long.

Stereotyping serves it's purpose, whether it's on a "newbie vs. oldbie" line, or elsewhere. We can say about a certain group that they tend to act in a certain way and, for the group, that tends to be true. Then, we can start dealing with individuals. It gives us a baseline from which to beging our assessment of the person.

And, as a thousand-post oldbie I can spout shite like this. :D

I'm a fucking newbie

Gawddamn right I am. I'm a newbie until Lasher proclaims that I am not.

What's the need? There isn't a need, it just happens. Newbies are only people who are feeling their way into the community. Some people are bitchy about new people others are not. I notice that they tend to band together for a while, I suppose until they feel "accepted" by the "general crowd" here. Regulars are people who have built relationships with each other. They say things to each other that persons new to the board don't always understand. Take the war between ppman and PC, a newbie would think that's all serious when they're just sniping at each other in fun. When do you not be a newbie? When you feel comfortable and not one whit sooner or one whit later. You set your own standard for "newbieness." It actually has jack to do with the people who come here regularly. Take AJ and his many incarnations. The man is a dolt, he doesn't understand the group dynamic, but he's comfortable here, so he's not a newbie.

I don't see what's with all the bitching and complaining over nothing more than what amounts to human nature.

Get over it.

lol

People like you that haven't a clue about sarcasm, and can't keep track of who's who on the board.

so when am i going to say something valuable ?

the REAL truth about newbie/regulars is that because im a newbie here still (until i say something valuable not likely to happen soon either) so everyone that started posting after me is still a newbie and everyone who posted before me is a regular ... got it now ?

Whoever said it's human nature to categorize AND it starts early is exactly right.

It would be different if people were ignoring newbies or truly flaming them just for being newbies, but I really haven't seen that happen.

Sexy-girl, I think your definition makes me a newbie. Can I really be a newbie with this many posts?

I think PacificBlue and JazzManJim have it right on this question. Homo sapiens are the evolutionary descendents of status-seeking creatures. Just go to your nearby zoo and observe our closest living relatives and you'll see primates locked in a struggle for individual status within the community just as you find with posters here

From the standpoint of evolutionary psychology, clashes like the one we recently saw between newbies like Rick DeVille and alpha-posters like PC can be seen as power struggles. PC bristled at Rick's incessant posting like an alpha chimp bearing his fangs to intimidate a new male rival. Rick smarted off and showed no fear to show that he deserved a place of status.

Read Chimpanzee Politics by Frans De Waal and you'll never look at human relationships the same way again. It's been criticized for anthropomorphizing apes, but I think it does what it should -

animalizes humans.

Now you're just trying to be dramatic.

I've never bristled. I've become aroused a few times, but I've never bristled. Take it back.

Yes, PC, you bristled. Bristling is lovely on the inner thighs. You should do it more often. Really, you must. Okay, I'm begging here. Nah, no begging. I'm ordering you to bristle. Right now is convenient since I'm not wearing pants.

I think we should further segregate everyone into tiny little compartments based on spelling, grammar, avs, number of posts, number of actual words posted, number of fingers, number of drinks required to make sense, number of times one has been fooled by an AJ offshoot, and number of the word number in ones posts.

Cest la vd.

My favoritist newbie is Todd.

Aroused?
Interesting...

And we not only are the evolutionary descendants of categorizing animals, we do it ourselves, all the livelong day, day in and day out.

We put the toilet paper on the shelf next to the paper towels - and not in the sink - because the toilet paper belongs on the shelf next to the paper towels.

We group roses in with redwoods when given a set of like things to group that consists of roses, redwoods, seashells and chimps.

We exclude some people from our circle of intimate, immediate, everyday friends because they live too far away for those weekly get-togethers or they have recently married a troll who won't let them come along or because they're new to us.

Blame carbon, why don't you?
Blame water.
Blame the intricacies of biochemistry.
It's life as we know it, as we've evolved into it, here on Earth.

Can a person's cock bristle with arousal? If so, then I'm guilty. But I never bristled at Rick. I mean, my cock never did. I mean, yeah, I might have given him shit, but I'm not gay. Why is everyone saying I'm gay? I'M NOT GAY!

Not that there's anything wrong with that.
