Why do the multiple "Unregistered"s

I don't think it's a lack of creativity. What i assume is that those among us who occasionally post unkind statements sans their regular nick (as opposed to those among us who do it as a joke and to make the rest of us smile) do so because they're afraid the rest of us won't like them (and its corollaries: be pissed at them, shocked, hurt, etc) anymore if we knew they gave voice to that mean side.

In a very small and controlled manner, i think some of the unregistered posts are legitimate. For instance, there is a thread going at the moment regarding one Lit member who posted stuff claiming her/his family member was among the missing in the WTC bombing. In fact, that assertion was not true. The Lit member posted it (i assume) in order to stir things up and garner some sympathy - and s/he got it, too. When it came to light that the postings were false, the Lit member sorta just disappeared and left a lot of people feeling very upset (mad, shamed, etc) for having been lied to and led by the feelings in that manner.

Since then, there has been someone, some regular Literotician, someone we all know, i am sure, who posts as Unregistered to remind the original poster that s/he did wrong and needs to apologize to the Board.

While i sympathize with the Unregistered poster and still feel some residual shock at such a blatant misuse of our care and concern for each other at that time, i can't help but feel it would be better for Unregistered to just move on. The original poster will not apologize and the rest of us, well, we'll remember, reminders or not.

In this case, and those like this, sometimes the Unregistereds can walk the line of respectability, in my opinion. However, the vast majority of Unregistered postings are made by those who are too ashamed to have their regular nick attached to the spewing of venom they're offering to the rest of us.

That's why we ignore, dismiss, and ridicule most Unregistered posting out of hand. They're no better than vermin, most of the time, like mosquitoes - tiny, mostly just a bother, but occasionally drawing blood in us all.

They lack the courage of their convictions -

They're essentially bottom feeding.

And maybe, just maybe, they are new here, testing the waters. Seeing if we are a friendly bunch, or not.

Well, are we?? Man, I sure hope so.

Can we expect every new person that stumbles upon us to register immediately? Nope.

Not stressing the unregistered unless they commence to flaming!!!

MS.

I have a theory! Like everyone else, I think it holds true that if you're generally well-liked among the Lit population, you don't want to risk ruining that image. There are lots of backstabbers in the world. I don't know if it's human nature, or a survival thing, but it sucks, and I would love to run a spear through the flaming unregistered trolls. (I think that might be true for most people)

My answer to that would be YES (!) we are a friendly bunch! I have felt totally accepted and respected by this community since day one and while I don't expect everyone to register here the majority of the "unregistered" comments are unkind (to say the least) and those should be flamed to preserve the energy on this board!

cheers to that!

The Lit community is so wonderful! Even with all my stupid questions at the beginning - everyone took me in like the new little lamb I was .... yay ... thank you oh nice people!!!!!

my opinion is that unregistered should not be allowed to post!
if you are not big enough to stand up for your convictions then keep them to yourselves . being unregistered is normally just a cowardly way to flame and incite people without any recriminations . it is literary terrorism in my view.

I disagree. While I haven't posted as "unregistered", I see a lot of people posting in the "How to" section as "unregistered", probably because they're too embarrassed to identify themselves. I think it's ok to save yoursefl from embarrassment, but not ok for flaming people.

Not allowing unregistereds to post does not solve the problem. Registering is simple and if unregistereds could not post, the trolls would simply register a name and use it to post their flames the same way they use unregistered now. It might take a few more seconds to log out and sign the troll id in but that's all that would change.

Starving them as STG suggested is the only way to rid ourselves of their presence.

I confess

I have purposely posted in one thread as unregistered quite some time ago when I first came here because I was embarassed to ask the question. I am comfortable enough with Lit members now that I realize it was a very tame subject compared to other threads, but there are a few cases of that.

Most of the unregistereds seem cowardly and mean spirited - two things that seem to define a bully. they also seem to want attention. The best thing we can do is refuse to give them that attention they crave and they will go away.

To them, nothing is more disenheartening than see a big fat 0 responses and having their thread dissapear to the second page, then the third, and so on. So don't respond as that gives them attention and it bumps the thread - just waht they feed off of - so starve them out and eventually they will either go away or stop saying such mean and stupid things.

?? I posted on this topic as me, and never asked for an apology. I'd rather the guilty party just disappear and not return to the board at all.

Never mind the unregistereds, that isn't any fun even when you put your name on it and it happens!

Mensa, you sound like that's happened to you and we know that can't be true.

Chey, i've never imagined, nor have i intended to imply, that the Unregistered i was talking about here was you. I hope you know that.

Guess again, as I told someone once, whenever I opened some of them I swear I could hear crickets chirping!!
