Why do people put their knuckles up when they make a middle finger?

I have always just naturally made it by sticking the middle finger up and keeping all the other fingers completely down.

I never really noticed or thought about it. Recently I've noticed some other people appear to keep the fingers on both sides of the middle finger about half way up next to the extended middle finger about to point of the first bend.

This looks both ugly and stupid at the same time. It seems particularly common among liberals like antifa, black racists and alphabets, but I've noticed others make it this way as well. I got into a road conflict with a blue collar type white or Latino guy in a pickup truck a couple weeks ago and hid did it like this too.
