Why do people care so much about alts?

At the risk of starting a big fight ... really, why does everyone worry about this so much? Why does it actually matter if someone has more than one name or profile or whatever on here? I'm not trying to be argumentative ... I'm genuinely curious. Am I missing something?

I think the vitriol comes from the fact that altho the rest of us stick to and stand firm to our own original user names....other's who are lambasted to the point they're run off the GB, leave.

They come back under another username, usually, annoying the rest of us as they had under their original name.

When people KNOW who one is, they are somewhat responsible for their reputation here.

Well, probably not the best explanation but....I'm sure you get it. :)

I suppose I'm saved by my shocking memory ... if someone offended me last month, I'm unlikely to remember who they were this month, so they may as well have a different name.

Many other's don't forget them. I swear, some here keep logs or something.

The chameleons here find themselves more aggressive with each name change.

I, myself saw you engage a couple of them in a recent couple of threads.

coach? and others. If I had the time and even cared, I could/would figure out who his original persona was.

But....I don't. It's a clusterfuck of trickery around here.

Oh, I definitely engage ... I just don't remember their names further down the track without something to jog my memory. Although Coach-whats-his-face may have earnt a special place in my heart by threatening to break my arm - that's a sort of stand-out moment I may remember.

But....he is not his original username...whom some here may know personally, otherwise.

Suppose he did pop up and break your arm...or worse?

Aside from that...I love how you engage. :D

I saw the tribute thread and elicited a hearty YEEHAW! :D

I think it may have to do with people thinking someone is a coward to hide behind an alt. Use you're original name to act like an asshole/troll than resorting to using an alt to do so.

You also have to consider that they may not be an alt, just someone who was banned and created another account.

It doesn't help an alt when their posts are glaringly obvious as to who they are.

I like accountability. If you want to say my mother wears combat boots, say it, own it, and move on. To create an alt to do the dirty work is chicken shit.

How much time do I dedicate to trying to pin a tail on a donkey? Not much. Some here like to do the detective work, put the clues together, and solve the puzzle. Go for it. There has been some damn fine Lit detective work thru the years. None of that was mine.

Play with them until it gets tedious. Toss them on the iggy. Move on. Repeat.

Well, now I'm blushing.

EXACTLY! Thanks Doll...you are obviously in-the-know around here! :D

I've seen some of that detective work...it was awesome and oh, so dramatic.

Great advice, Saint Peter. A very balanced and common sense answer!

You are one of my faves here....*blush*

I think most posters will have their own reasons if they do care about which alt belongs to who.

Some alts aren't malicious and they've possibly been invented by a poster to entertain or play the class clown. Silly buffoonery.

Some alts are trolls. For some reason they don't have the courage to say what they think under their main name.

Why do I care?

I don't unless the alt is someone being cruel, spread nasty untruths, messing with someones private info, stalking that goes into real life too.

I've watched many alts and their crap spew onto the board.

For me it's about trust.

Debbie, who on earth, here, would not trust YOU?

You have always been honest and have the easy-going point of view.

I can't speak for everybody here, but I do find that my own temperament is often tamed whenever I see you on the GB.

I adore you.

Whilst i understand SOME peoples intentions regarding their use of Alts here on Lit, i VERY much appreciate knowing who i'm actually talking to.
When they choose to share with me who they are or which alt belongs them, i respect that information deeply and indefinitely.
I guess there are many legitimate reasons for feeling the need to have one, but Being a 2faced gutless turd yodeler isnt one of them though.

I'm going to share my flue with you. :D

Alts are cowardly.

People who use alts, tend to be cowards.

Also, lots of people on here have been banned for breaking forum rules, dozens of times, and come back with alts, because they're sad sacks. Busybody, miles, veteman, eeyore, and JBJ are examples of this.

Other than people wanting to swap gender for roleplay purposes, I can only think it is done to distance themselves emotionally from the posts. I'm talking about the plague of GB trolls get banned and come back, or ones whose posts are so vile and tedious that everyone puts them on iggy. An asshole is an asshole by any name and it doesn't take long to spot them once you read the shit they spew out.

Yet everyone here is somebody other than themselves.

I think just the opposite is true.

The liar only fools himself.

Truth is usually stranger than fiction.

I agree with Debbie, it is about trust. I also agre with the others that called alt users cowards.

Some, I think, are concerned that an alt might be created by someone with malicious intent to gain trust with one persona while being a douchebag under a different persona. If the purpose of the alt is to do harm and betray trust, that's a pretty shitty thing to do, and I'm sure it has happened more than once.

There are perfectly valid reasons why someone might want to post under more than one name, and as long as it isn't for the intention of harm, I don't see that it matters.

It does seem a bit much when natural caution spirals into paranoia, but if someone has been caught up in or witnessed a betrayal situation at some point, it's understandable.

pretty much this

the worst, imo, are the eejits who make an alt to spew the vitriol they won't under their regular username. if you're gonna say it, own it.
