It's not easy, but whining and wallowing in self pity doesnt help.
He needs to realize that having someone won't make him happy. I get the idea that he doesn't have much self confidence, and that in some way, he has made himself believe that he's not worth someone else's time. If he can't love himself first, someone else won't make him truly happy.
