People like patterns. They find it more interesting.
A public scandal is always there not because of moral grounds, but because it entertains the audience. And it's MUCH more interested for the ignorant public if there's a neat pattern.
I'm not sure what the fuss is about, but if Jews are really blamed for something - chances are they just found themselves on a short end of someone seeking a pattern. And when it catches - there's no point in trying to deny it - no one will be interested in truth anymore, when there's this neat and clear explanation
