Somalia would be good to get some payback and help clean up that god for saken place. The same with Sudan.

I don't put too much credit with the Philipines. They do have a terrorist problem and Al queda is there but just don't see us going there next.

I am thinking Yemen. There are huge terror and Al queda networks there and the government is fairly friendly to us. They are at least trying to do something about it even if they aren't so succesful.

Geopolitics 101

Well, well-- I've certainly managed to attract a bunch of right-wingers with this little thread, haven't I? Interesting.

Here's my thought on the subject. Obviously, the target of choice is Iraq. It's a key Middle Eastern country, with a large population, strategic location, and plenty of oil. Also, Pappy still holds a grudge about Hussein still being in power long after he was voted out, so now he wants revenge. However, there are serious pragmatic reasons for not attacking Iraq, which Colin Powell is almost certainly pointing out to Dubya. Namely, the Arabic nations in the fragile "coalition" the U.S. has put together will likely plunge into chaos, with their people rebelling and overthrowing the government in those countries. There is also a lot of opposition to the idea in Europe.

Therefore, the U.S. will probably strike next at an easier target, but one which is still of some strategic significance. Yemen or Somalia fit the bill best. Yemen is on, and Somalia is near, the strategic Bab el Mandeb, the strait between the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, which leads out into the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean-- i.e., open water. As such, it is a very important point of world shipping lines.

I really hate it when people make broad chacterizations about huge groups of people. Whether it be political, racial, sexual whatever. One of my big pet peves.

The "left" do not all think the same way just like the "right" don't. The "left" is not always wrong and the "right" is not always right.
The "left" is not full of pansy tree huggers and the "right" is not full of gung ho gun nuts.

Me and my roommate are perfect examples of this. He is very very far to the right on a lot of things, but is not religious at all so is liberal on many other things like porn, abortion, prayer in school. I am to the left of him on many things. A little bit of socialism is good. Welfare is good for the most part but you can't over do it.

I don't like the death penalty for a lot for reasons he is for it.

He knows pretty much nothing about guns. Never really fired them never owned one nothing. I have been in shooting competitions before and spend a lot of time around various firearms.

Whenever he starts to say that there should be few if any gun control laws i tune him out since he has no clue what he is talking about.

Iraq would be the target of choice, if we wouldn't get pummelled in the international press & governments. Especially with all the tension about our backing of Sharon and Israel's role in the ongoing failure of Middle Eastern peace accords, it just doesn't seem like the right time. Probably not until after Passover, anyway.

I'm thinking Somalia. They're gearing up for it; all of a sudden the U.S. press remembers that Africa exists. Whenever our press remembers a continent we typically allow to dry rot in their own poverty (think South America), it's usually because we're preparing to invade it.

Those lucky Somalis!

Well, Somalia seems to have won the sweepstakes as "The Country Most Likely to Have the Shit Bombed Out of It Next." Somalis must be feeling so fortunate! I know if I was in Somalia and had the means, I'd be scrambling to get the hell out of there before the hammer falls! We'll see how prescient our poll-takers prove to be, but Somalia is a pretty good bet. Next maybe the casinos here in Vegas will be making odds on which country will get hit next!

If Somalia is next, it will definitely be possible to see a pattern emerge. Afghanistan was a war-ravaged shell, with very little infrastructure before the bombing. Somalia is in total chaos, not even having a central government, just rival groups fighting it out. The pattern we are seeing is that of the world's strongest state systematically attacking the world's weakest states and societies, and plunging them into more chaos. The Afghanis who were supposedly celebrating their "liberation" by the U.S. are facing mass starvation due to the devastating U.S. bombing.

Meanwhile, no one in power is even talking about attacking Cuba, for instance. Why not? Certainly not out of any love for Fidel Castro or communism. Rather, the answer is Cuba has a strong, cohesive society which would unite in fervent opposition to the foreign invader. The U.S. could conquer Cuba, sure-- but it would cost far too much in U.S. lives to go over well with the public. Hence the bullying U.S. imperialists go after easy targets: societies which are in near anarchy to begin with. In those kinds of societies, it's easy to bribe locals to do your dirty work for you.
