I think Sergeant Schultz is the one you mean as the lovable chubby one. His famous line was "I know NUTHINGG!" The other main Nazis were nasty Major Hochstetter of the SS and General Burkhalter, a career German military man.

Probably not for at least ten years, maybe never. Al-Quaeda mostly just kills their captives.

I think Hogan's Heroes was based partly on Stalag 17, which came out in 1953. That was at least eight years after the fact. S17 was much more serious but there were comic parts and a fat sergeant similar to Schultz.
