I think Sergeant Schultz is the one you mean as the lovable chubby one. His famous line was "I know NUTHINGG!" The other main Nazis were nasty Major Hochstetter of the SS and General Burkhalter, a career German military man.

When are they going to make a comedy based on al-Quaida and the Americans they hold captive?

Jaime Farr is available. Or dead. (One and the same, really.)

Probably not for at least ten years, maybe never. Al-Quaeda mostly just kills their captives.

I think Hogan's Heroes was based partly on Stalag 17, which came out in 1953. That was at least eight years after the fact. S17 was much more serious but there were comic parts and a fat sergeant similar to Schultz.

"Love That Ryan!" loosely based on Saving Private Ryan is rumored to be on NBC's summer schedule.

"List This, Mr. Shindler" is 'on the back burner,' according to Fox TV programming executives, pending negotiations with an unnamed member of the former cast of "Friends.'

The Broadway-bound musical comedy, "Oh! Guantanamo" is described by the producer as "a multi-ethnic 'Oklahoma!' with overtones of 'Gomer Pyle, USMC.'"

Hey why not? I just heard that Grayline Tours is giving $35 "disaster tours" of New Orleans, so I guess anything goes.
