Palm Center History (1998 - Present)

Blueprints for Sound Public Policy

The Palm Center, founded in 1998, originally was known as the Center for the Study of Sexual Minorities in the Military [CSSMM]. In 2006, in recognition of a $1 million dollar endowment gift from the Michael D. Palm Foundation, the Center was renamed. In 2011, the Palm Center became a distinct Center under the Williams Institute at the University of California Los Angeles, School of Law.

The Palm Center's research has been cited on the floor of Congress and covered by newspapers and radio and television stations throughout the world. Palm scholars have delivered briefings and lectures at the British Ministry of Defence, the United States Military Academy at West Point, the United States Naval Academy, the United States Air Force Academy, the Army War College and the National Defense University.

Published today by the Palm Center of the Williams Institute at the University of California Los Angeles, School of Law, it is the first academic study of the repeal of DADT and it shows that the repeal has not resulted in any consequences for military readiness, cohesion, recruitment, retention, assaults, harassment or morale.

A gay study group found that gays were ok. Well there's a surprise.
Doesn't anyone bother with impartiality anymore?

What made it interesting to me was that it was the first one done. I'm waiting for the AEI to come out and tell us that all Marines are unruly cowards now, since DADT was offed. For some reason, the whackodouche right has stopped telling us that's the automatic result.

It's only been a year. Most gay recruits haven't even started boot yet. How a decent study could be done in a short amount of time and be accurate is beyond me. They would have had to start it almost immediately after the repeal and in that case of course there wasn't any change.
They want it to be true so they made it so. It's dishonest at best.

I'll wait until I know what Vetteman thinks.

He thinks people of all sexual orientation should be allowed to openly serve because gays have the exact same rights as anyone else.

He told me so in a PM. He didn't want anyone to know but I think it's best that you do.

I've always had faith in our troops. If you have to deal with the reality that you're training to kill people and that people want to kill you, I'd think that the idea that someone might think you're hot is not a primary concern.

recently

a Prof issued a scholarly paper showing that GAY PARENTS hurt their kids......

HE WAS THREATENED WITH DEATH AND FIRING

So we all KNOW what the fucking STUDIES on THIS SHIT WILL SAY

You're discounting those who were already serving and now can be out.

But I'm curious what you think of the issue; do you think it matters if people are out in the military? I'm asking you as a veteran Marine. I know people in all the other branches, but not any Marines. Everyone I know in the military or recently out says no one gives a shit whether another soldier, airman, etc is queer.

Bwahahaha!

What about the gays and lesbians that were already in? I know we had one of each in our unit which always made for whacky moments of a bunch of twenty year olds playing "you know how I know your gay" and then Gunny pulling someone a side or giving that death glare of "You can't play you know how I know your gay with gays in the room!"

I had this discussion in Basic, me and a heavily-tattoed liberal freakboy from Southern California against the rest of the platoon. I seriously thought we were going to get our asses kicked, but nobody wanted to fight the oldest man in the company and the punk who'd done time for assault. Or something. Anyway, after the heat subsided, most of the guys were sort of like, "I'm no fag, but I don't care who is, as long as they do their job and leave me alone."

I think you're right; even those guys adapted and did the job.

Ones that were already in and then came out are almost surely a small number compared to incoming recruits. Many who were closeted will stay that way until discharge just because it's easier than telling SEAL Team 6 that you've been checking out the point mans ass.
Ultimately it's doubtful gays will have a negative impact but the idea of a study at this point in time is just dumb. Especially a study done by a gay rights group. They really had no business doing it in the first place.

Sigh. It's not everyday you make a funny but when you do, holy shit. Can you crack a rib from laughing too hard or is that just because I went over a minute unable to breath?

There were already lots of gay people in the military. I had two friends in the Navy, one male, one female, both gay...married for the cover and the benefits.

Anybody who wasn't already socially brain dead and in denial knew.

Gay rights groups care more than anyone else, so of course they're going to do the study.

Your argument here is a classic fallacy.

It's too bad Vette is still afraid of me and won't see the post.

In addition to them already serving I doubt that many of them were particularly successful in keeping it on the DL. Maybe for a few months but I found that living and working with the same people kinda gave you a decent tell.

Not to mention for the guys if they show up at the Marine Corps Ball consistently single it's either their wives are deployed overseas or their gay. There is no third option.

Yup. I used to get email forwards from a dyke (her word) who was deployed in Iraq via a friend of mine who knew her. She was out to her friends and associates, but not officially, and her wife was persona non grata.

Which, of course, is the whole point. The wife should have been able to have the same access and benefits that a husband would have.
