BBC2 TV here in the UK has been running a show each week highlighting a different Briton and the general public have been asked to vote on who they think is the greatest Briton of all time, well the final's are tonight and here are the nominees(sp)

Nelson, Shakespeare, Elizabeth I, Diana, Princess of Wales, Brunel, Newton, John Lennon, Oliver Cromwell, Churchill and Darwin.

So who do you think was the greatest of them and who would you nominate as the greatest person of all time to come from your country ?

shakespeare because he's the greatest writer to ever live and written word is humankind's greatest invention

Shakespeare. His plays, characters and coined words have influenced human communication and thought more than any other writer -- save God.

John Lennon.

You may say I'm a dreamer.

But I'm not the only one.

I hope some day you'll join us.

And I'll cum on your face.

dixon you rock :)

churchill was the one that actually won and i kinda find that a shame although he was undoubtably amazing and great what he did

i'd rather celebrate someone like a scientist or an artist or a writer then someone who defended us against war

what? they left Tim the Enchanter off the list? bastards!

No mention of Dr. Who? He saved the universe how many times . . . ?

Maybe I'm mistaken but I don't think there were any philosophers in the top hundred. What does that say about our society? I'm no expert in philosophy but I know there have been many influential British philosophers, David Hume,
John Locke, John Stuart Mill, Bertrand Russell spring into mind.

I'm not saying any one of them was the greatest Britain ever but surely they could have figured more prominently in the competition. For some reason, it seems we don't revere our philosopers as other Europeans do theirs.

Also, out of shortlist, IMO, there were only three contenders:

Newton

Shakespeare

Darwin

Ohhh Ohhhh...I know...George Washington...NO, Thomas Jefferson...NO...Alexander Hamilton...NO...damn...so many to choose from and so few that got smart...

I was going to say Churchill, but Tony Slattery and Tim Curry seem like better choices by far.
edited to add Mr. Bean. He looks good in happy pants

All kidding aside...How about John Lennon, or George Harrison, or Eric Clapton? John Cleese, David Niven? Shakespere was great of course...but his works need to be updated for the masses. Still keep them original, but do some modern worded ones to keep them...readable.

Who would you say are the greatest ever Americans who ever lived ?

If it wasn't for Churchill and the many others who defended us against war, would the scientists, artists and writers have had the freedom to pursue their dreams?

I was thinking about that as a thread topic, it would be interesting. Do you fancy starting a thread on it
