Art is....expressive, politically charged, emotional, wise, humorous, wonderful, amazing, surreal, abstract, beautiful, ugly, bland, timeless. Art is whatever you would like it to be.

And with that, I was wondering, who is your favorite artist? Period? Piece of work? Medium?

My favorite period by far is Impressionism. My favorite artists are either Frida Khalo or Artesmia Gentilleschi (both women lived very interesting lives). My favorite architectural structure is either Frank Lloyd Wright's Falling Water or the Sistine Chapel. My favorite piece of work.....well, the Art History major in me is unbiased.

So, please share.

I don't really have any favorite artist, the paintings I've liked enough to have on my walls have been by

Durer
Bosch
Turner
Escher
Cezanne

Cezanne! They call him the "Grandfather of Cubism." Picasso and Braque were heavily influenced by his technique, if it even possible to imagine. Love his work.

And Durer is amazing. He was one of the first ever artists to begin signing his work, which led to the progression of the elevated status of the artist.

Thomas Kinkaide. :D

*ducking*

I'm kidding. Although my mother loves him... my husband the former artist grits his teeth every time we walk into her house. Tee hee.

I mostly don't "get" art... I've often thought I really need some sort of "teacher" in that regard... Art History put me to sleep... zzzzzz... I need someone one-on-one who has a passion for it, so I can feel that passion, too... that's the way I learn best...

I'm heavily biased - my wife is an artist.

Here is a link to a specific arts programme we are both closely involved with.

There is a performance artist on the website BreadMatters III - West Cork, look for Nigel Rolfe, a genius in my opinion.

Painters - Paula Rego, Edvard Munch
Printmakers - Bartolomeu dos Santos, Henri Pont
Sculptors - Brancussi, Henry Moore, Gary Martin
Installation - Ines Amado, Tracy Emin, Rachael Whiteread
Sound - Maia Urstad, Dave Lawrence

I feel so small and strange in "art" discussions... I know what I like when I see it... but I don't know what I'm "supposed" to like... or why... I can only add something like, "It's pretty..." Not exactly a major discussion point.

This painting inspired my story The Orange Slip.

I guess this has been my favourite in recent years for that reason.

You are supposed to like what pleases YOU! It is OK to like something because it is pretty.

I cruise galleries until I find an image or setting, something that pleases me, only then do I start thinking about why it pleases me. It might be the colour, composition, arrangement, design, any one of a hundred things. Having found something I like, I'll seek out other works by the same artist, browse a catalogue, look at the history of their work, where the work sprang from, their motivation 'as seen through their work' trying to reach a deeper understanding of what the artist saw to render the image I like and why that image relates to me.

Try not to visit a gallery with an artist - they will only confuse you

I'd be happy to be your passionate art person. :D ;)

Hey, you know what you like. This is wonderful. Also, I feel very small and strange in political discussions. I shrink to about the size of a pea, probably because I've only been on this Earth a total of 19 years.

But art is beauty, and it comforts me. Stick with what you like. The major reason artists paint or sculpt or sketch is to convey emotion and feeling, not just make some grandiose politcal message. So, I think if you can appeciate art, then that is great!

And about Thomas Kincaide. Bite your tongue! :p

I love it. Very flirty and feminine. I also like how you can't see her face. It adds an element of mystery to the piece.

The Impressionists,no question.

They knocked all that stuffy 'portrait art' (Durer, Holbein, et al ) into a cocked hat.

My faves include: Monet (waterlilies), Mary Cassatt, Camille Pissaro, Berthe Morisot and Edgar Degas (actually a Realist but part of the gang).

Post-Impressionists are cool too (van Gogh, Gauguin, Toulouse-Latrec, etc.)

Nothing compares to seeing the original in galleries. Photos do not begin to convey the power of the artists works when you can see the brush strokes.

I was an Art Major for three whole semesters (lol), but I learned a lot.

I enjoy all forms of art, but paintings are tops with me.

Sculpture is a close second.

Ars longa, vita brevis.

Peace.

Dali. I love weird, surreal visuals.

Hehe, Dali co-directed the strangest, most surreal film. It is called Chen de Andelou. I highly recommend it if you like very trippy, weird films, although it is silent. It delves a lot into Freudian thought. And perhaps his most famous visual work, Persistence of Time, is genius and revolutionary.

Wow, I just keep talking and talking. I hope ya'll don't mind. It is just that among all other things I understand art, and I love discussing it with people.

Another Impressionist lover! Ha! I love Mary Cassat. We compared a lot of her stuff with Renoir and the portrayal or the feminine subject from a female and male artist's point of view.

Hehe Yes, the Impressionists sure did blow the traditional French Academy's tops off.

Also, what made you switch majors? Just curious. :D

Oh god where to start!

Dali (imaginative overactive subconcious!) The Persistance of Memory, Crucifixtion- hypercubic body

Actually I don't mind at all. Erotica is art, after all. I had no idea about Dali's silent film, so thanks for the info on that. :rose:

I've been to exhibits with the artist every once in a while. However, attending a gallery with a critic, now that's weird.

Critic: "This sculpture is an obvious cryout for structure in a phantasmagoria of opaque deconstructivistic ideals."

Artist: "Dude, it's my wife."

I also loved English, r-r and I wanted to teach. Finally wound up with a BA in Education.

English major, art minor.

No one was hiring, so I took a government job to tide me over until I could pay off my loans.

Forty years later, I retired from the government.

The ball of life takes some funny bounces, no?

I still love Art.

Peace.

Very nice mix there. A lot of my art work is influenced by Degas. Love the man.

And I recommend seeing the movie 'Frida' if you like Khalo. She led an interesting life indeed.

Okay, let's talk photography. You've got me hooked. Hehe.... ;)

LOL! Ummm yeah, this is so true. I plan on being an art critic. Although, I hope I am not like that.
