Who is Paul McCartney?

Froggy went a courtin' and he did ride uh huh, uh huh.
Froggy went a courtin' and he did ride uh huh, uh huh.
Froggy went a courtin' and he did ride
His sword and pistol by his side uh huh, uh huh, uh huh.

Time went a movin’ it did ride, uh huh, uh huh.
Kids in the 80’s all aside, uh huh, uh, huh.

McCartney in a band before the Wings? Oh, my, oh my.
More of cabbages and old dead Kings, oh my, oh, my.

Superbowl production, wardrobe malfunction, uh huh, uh huh
Gray haired old man with a new guitar, uh huh, uh huh.
Societal dysfunction, kids waving arms 60’s style, uh huh, uh huh
What do we see when we see from afar? uh huh, uh huh
Long and Winding Road by a country mile, uh huh, huh.

Author's Questions/Comments
Well, this didn't work for me and why 'Froggy went a courtin'" ever came to mind I will never know. But in the 80's, growing teenaged daughters, one commented, 'you mean Paul McCartney was in a group before Wings?' She had never heard of the Beattles, 20 years ago. And so, with a bland performance by McCartney at halftime of superbowl 39, I wonder just how many young people in the television audience had even a clue as to just who, Paul McCartney is/was?

Criticize the poetry if you wish, as I said, I had an idea, but I could not make it work...happens a lot....

But I did have the thought that the music of Paul McCartney, whom I think was the heart and soul of the Beattles, could have been much better presented in both selection of songs, style and production during the halftime show.

I was disappointed and wondered if any one else felt the same?

But I won a little money with the Patriots, so I guess I can't complain....

All the kids with halfway respectable musical taste know who he is/was.

And let's be honest. When was the last time good music was played at a Halftime Show?

Nice try with the poem......... Isn't it just the same for all of us though? - Paul McCartney - good in one band, poor in the other(s) - hey we've all had career changes that haven't worked out - at least he sung some decent songs - part of the time!

Aerosmith, but I can't remember when that was...

The Frog Chorus was his finest hour.

(Didn't see the halftime show, but liked yer poem).

Paul McCartney is one of the most accomplished muscians in the world. He and his bandmates esssentially invented the modern rock concert tour, concept albums, and popularized rock music to the point where it has become the popular music of our culture.

He is one of the wealthiest men in the world. He supports peaceful causes and is a pro-American British citizen.

The fact that he was rolled out as a safe alternative to 'edgier' groups is very ironic as his albums have been burned and banned in the past.

His 'new' guitar is a vintage Hofner "violin-shaped" bass strung left-handed. It had been extensively modified.

Anybody that thinks Sir Paul is irrelevant has no clue as to the relative popularity of his music versus any of the flash-in-the-pan one-hit wonders on the scene today. Check Radio & Records for how much Sir Paul's music is heard worldwide versus your current fave. And if you think that's bogus, wait around about five years, or fifty and turn on a radio. I guarantee you'll hear Sir Paul. I doubt you'll hear anyone in the Billboard top ten.

Strongmaster7...perhaps you did not read between the lines.

Paul McCartney's music will live forever, but not for all. And sadly it will diminish, as it has been doing.

But then, a few of us still know and listen to Django and Edith Piaff and a handfull of musicians from the 30's and 40's and more than a handfull from the 50's and 60's in many venues.

Times come and go and they change, my children know of the greats, they know I appreciate them...what else can we do?

Does anyone remember the super bowl halftime show with Up With People?
That's entertainment!

From reading all the superbowl threads, I feel I am very fortunate never to have witnessed this event. Partially because I don't think I would understand the tribal symbols.

I also can not fathom the obscene wealth required to pay for a television commercial, that is, at the end of the day, just a small piece of cultural fluff.

The world is rather amazing.

PS Sir Paul wrote one of two good songs (in my humble opinion), the real genius of the beatles was John Lennon who would probably not accepted the knighthood.

I vaguely remember the first time they used seating cards to make those crowd mosaics in the stadium. Everyone was concerned that no one would follw the instructions and flip them over at the right time. I think they stole the idea from an Olympics opening ceremony.

That said, Sir Paul delivered on Get Back and Baby, You Can Drive My Car, but the Live and Let Die pyros, followed by the forced sentiment of Hey Jude (a song to John Lennon's son, btw) plunged the show right back into the spectacle we all expectacle.
