OK, A little quick research at Google reveals it was actually a greek guy famous for throwing parties named Bongurubas. The comment about hashish was dead on, though, evidently they had trouble getting it to burn well unless "holding a glowing ember" very close to it, which produced such a hot vapor that ol Bongurubas set about creating a way to cool the smoke.
