You forgot Spetznatz(sp?) for the Russians and Mossad for Israel.

Edited cause I am dumb and did not see Russia up there, but for future reference there special forces are called Spetznaz or something like that.

I am biased - I voted Navy SEALs since I had met some ("C" school in Yorktown, they attended a CG outboard motor maintenance school I attended at the same time), and they brought a movie and slides of some of the stuff they go through in their training/recruiting, and some of the stuff they do.

More objectively, knowing a little about the above, and knowing that the US spares no expense on their training and equipment, I would give the edge to the US military for special forces.

But then I know very little about other country's special forces.

I am having a mental block on the exact names of the French Special forces and the German one too.

Grr pisses me off when I can't remember simple stuff like that.

I had to go with the SEALs too. I have met a couple and also agree with everything STG said.

After them I would have to probably say Marine Recon and then most likey British SAS. The Australian SAS is very similar to the British and probably about equal in skill level. The SBS is another British special forces unit that are more like our Navy SEALs.

I had to go with the SEALs-went to high school with a guy who got in and there was just an interesting article in Playboy this month about "Hell Week".

Spetsnaz, but English spelling sometimes changes daily for foreign words, especially when translating from a language that has a foreign alphabet.

Oh, and the Mossad is not a military special force, they are an intelligence organization like the CIA.

It has to be the U.S. or Israel, and the Brits are also tops ... Is "Canadian Mounties" a joke?

Who's the best?

According to G. Gordon Liddy, who himself earned his Israeli Paratrooper wings :

The US Navy SEALS are the most riggorously trained & best equipped in the world.

British SAS are a close second.

However, he points out that they are specialized by definition, and play different roles.

An ideal SEAL mission would rescue or destroy something, without any witnesses or proof that they were ever involved.

An ideal SAS mission would rescue or destroy something, and bring honor to the Realm.

I knew they did intelligence like CIA but I thought they had a strong paramillitary arm too. Much stronger then CIA's paramilitary force. I might be getting it confused I have way too much crap floating around in my head.

Isreal, or GSG9 from Germany... they get all the real world practice they can handle. Then I would place Delta force and Navy SEALs in together, followed by British 22SAS. IMHO

Forgot about Israel. Thank goodness I live in a country where I can.

yay! It's Topher!

I see my friends from the SUV thread are here! Hi guys! :D

Don't worry, I'm usually a left-wing, knee-jerk, bleeding-heart, anti-spanking, pro-welfare, peacenik, Nader-voting Chomsky lover, but my Republican sentiments are going to make an appearence here:

<quote>
(1968)
Dec. 26: Arab guerrillas machine-gun Israeli airliner at Athens airport.
Dec. 28: Israeli commandos raided Beirut airport, destroying 13 Arab aircraft.
</quote>

Lol! I found this in a Israeli-history timeline (sorry reference was lost) that I used for brushing up on Middle Eastern history shortly after 9/11. I don't know if the mystique of the Israeli Special Forces is deserved, but always assumed that they kicked ass the best because of the crucible they are in. We may have great training and superior resources, but I would bet on the Israeli in a 1-on-1 equal-resources US vs Israeli faceoff.
Perhaps they are overrated. Does anyone know more about it?
Yeah Mossad's like the CIA. Israel special forces are something like IDF Israeli Defense Force or something like that? Or is that just the Army?

IDF covers all the military in Isreal. And yes Mossad does have a paramilitary wing made up mainly of ex Isreali special forces personnel.

I'm actually surprised noone has mentioned the Ghurkas... a mercenary force but one that you don't want to fuck with. I exercised with them in Malaysia in '84. They are real scary little buggers.

The Ghurkas are actually part of the S.A.S. I believe. They're Indian.

Close but no cigar... they are Nepalese. And no they aren't part of the SAS, they have been on longterm contract to the British army since Jesus was a sniper. They are similar in organisation to the Swiss Guards who are I think the oldest mercenary force in the world. Those guys look after the pope.

Yeah the same ones that were so feared by the rest of the world that the Swiss had to sign a treaty never to export mercenaries again. This was sometime in the late 1800's i think.

I would not call their outfits "faggoty" and I don't think that is an appropriate word for a liberal, PC, Grad student to use.
