Who gets vaccine first? What am I missing

Isn't one of the main concerns 'stop the spread'?

Give vaccine shots to those who test positive?

We are running out of ICU and hospital beds, so why aren't those patients offered chance to participate in "another trial"? When faced with death, I do believe people would take a vaccine which kills the virus.

I'm not an expert, but I don't think giving the vaccine to those who are already positive won't do anything. Vaccines prevent, not cure, a virus. Frontline healthcare workers are likely to be first, followed by those in nursing homes. Then I guess you work your way down generally by age group. At least I hope so - I want my 80-year-old parents to get that shit quickly.

The purpose of the vaccine is to prevent infection. It does not "kill the virus". If you have tested positive...you have it...the vaccine will do nothing. Give it to our frontline nurses and doctors first. This is the weak link. Then give it to old people in nursing homes

There is ONLY ONE way to kill a virus. Our immune system. We create antibodies...they attach to an identified virus, and our white blood cells come in and eats it. (It is more complicated than this, but it is close enough for lay people). There is no medication that kills viruses. Anti-viral medicines block certain proteins required by the virus to replicate...slowing down replication and allowing our immune system to work more efficiently.

Hopefully panicked hypochondriac control freaks of the left....maybe calm their inner Stalin's down a bit before they start building gulags.

The proposed UK system is expected to be:

1. People in care homes and the staff plus NHS front line workers.

2. Those over 80.

3 Those over 75.

4. Those over 65 with compromised immune systems

5. Those over 50 with compromised immune systems

6. Those adults with compromised immune systems

7. All other adults.

Part 1 might starte before Christmas depending on rulings on the safety of the various vaccines.

And then I see the disinfectant, where it knocks it out in one minute. And is there a way we can do something like that, by injection inside or almost a cleaning, because you see it gets in the lungs and it does a tremendous number on the lungs, so it’d be interesting to check that, so that you’re going to have to use medical doctors with, but it sounds interesting to me.

That sounds like a solid rollout plan.

I am talking about inside our bodies. Or you can believe Republicans and drink bleach...

There is a second alternative past the front-line workers...this is to immunize those most affecting the economy. This actually may reduce overall mortality the most and provide the greatest economic boost. Tough call

True, But the UK order prioritizes those most at risk.

After stage two they expect to move quickly through the rest.

In America, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices meets today. They prefer that name over “Death Panel.”

I hear the members of the panel still want to keep their personal "Dark Lord" titles though.

Some of you haven't been following the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines. They use new RNA technology which produce antibodies which destroy the virus's ability to reproduce. Thus, it in fact is quite useful in those already infected. It will save lives. Moderna claims that their vaccine was 100% effective in critical care patients. The sooner you can stop those who spread, the better.

Isn't there way to get like, a powerful light?

I think you're misinterpreting that. It was 100% effective in preventing severe cases, i.e., of the 5 patients who developed COVID despite receiving the vaccine, none developed severe cases. I don't believe the vaccine was given to anyone already infected.

Yeah, like what if we used uV light in the lungs? Maybe combined it with hydrochloroquin and bleach treatments?

Sounds interesting to me. Hell, my uncle was a doctor, so maybe I've got that doctor gene! Follow my advice. What have you got to lose?

No. The vaccine DOES NOT PRODUCE ANTIBODIES. It is messenger RNA, which codes for the attachment protein structure of the virus...the part that antibodies attach to. Think of it like this...everyone has heard of DNA. Well DNA is read by transcriptase...a protein...and it makes messenger RNA. Messenger RNA is then read by ribosomes to make proteins.
Viruses do not contain DNA...they contain RNA. And that RNA, is also read by a transcriptase...but a different one than for DNA. But it makes the same thing...messenger RNA. The antibodies are made by our immune system in response to the protein coat of the virus. This vaccine, forces our body to make the protein coat of the virus...which our body identifies as foreign...and then makes antibodies for that protein coat. When we get exposed to the virus...we will have antibodies floating around that recognizes the protein coat...and attaches to the virus. When this happens, our body then sends in the big guns...things like white blood cells...and they eat the virus...killing it. There is also a secondary line of defense known as T-cells...that are used for long-term immunity protection.

The vaccine does not prevent you from getting the virus. You will get it. Everyone will. But you will have antibodies floating around to kill the virus at such an early point of infection...you probably won't even know you got the virus.

A vaccine is preventive. Ergo, giving to someone who is already infected is a waste of the 2-dose course at best or turns you into a mutant (think Swamp Thing, not X-Men) at worst.

If the virus is killed early on, then it won’t be able to spread and not everyone will catch it.

Not all vaccines are only preventative; some are therapeutic. But I don't know which, if any, of the coronavirus vaccines are believed to be therapeutic.

Maybe...but we do not know this for sure. At least I have not seen it published. What is the minimal threshold of transmission? How long will immunity last? Why are people getting the disease more than once? Too many unknowns.

Polio is a virus everyone has heard of. It is rare to hear of a person not vaccinated. Yet it still exists. Why? Because it is transmitted all the time. If you have been vaccinated...you fight it off. If you haven't...you die. Yet it still exists. Viruses are a conundrum...they are delicate...yet fucking tough as hell.

Never underestimate a virus. Assume the worst, and be glad if it isn't that. This virus...like all other coronaviruses...does not appear to just disappear. There is quite a bit of information we know about this family...even if this particular virus strain is new

At the present? None.

They might be. They haven't been tested, or approved, for it.

Breaking news. The Pfizer vaccine has been approved for use in the UK.

Whole lotta science in this thread. I am perplexed that Lit's self-proclaimed "Scientist Supreme" (AJ) hasn't blessed us with his presence.
