Who else has given up air travel for pleasure?

For me it has become so miserable I would rather drive. Some of you might say it's faster to fly but if you can reach your destination driving in one day I say it's no faster. Considering the drive to the airport, putting in the time cushion to find parking and catch the shuttle to the airport, time cushion to get through the TSA checkpoints, hoping the flight is on time or hasn't been canceled, and getting to the other end, finding your bags and renting a car. That's pretty much as much time you would spend driving a day and you don't have to be treated like a possible terrorist for making the trip. No one demands you take off you shoes, Xray you or get your luggage inspected.

It has actually changed how I travel for pleasure. If the trip might take two days I plan the first day's drive a little short and stop where there is something interesting to do.

There are a lot of interesting thing to do within one or two days drive that I explore them more rather than deal with the hassles of air travel.

I pretty much feel the same way. It's become too much of a PITA to mess with. My last flight was in 2011 to visit my mom in Florida. I can only assume it has gotten worse since then. It's a shame because I love to fly.

It's def faster to fly, for me. I'm thoroughly looking forward to my trip south in July, for many different reasons. Its going to take me about 10 1/2 hrs in various airports to get where I'm going, it always helps to not be an idiot when traveling. Going thru customs is a whole nother ball of wax, thankfully not doing that this time.

If I wanted to go to California from the east coast I have done that. It's way faster. What I was saying is I have actually changed my touristing nonessential plans to avoid air travel.

Edited to add

You are no longer allowed to be an idiot on airlines. You will pay somehow.

Of course I fly myself where I need to go, and don't have to deal with the hassles the airlines have become. And I can take several hundred pounds of baggage if I wish to do so (all the hair gel I could ever need), and I can take my own scissors! My skies actually are friendly!

Can I be your new best friend?

In Europe I drive after crossing from Dover to Calais or use a high-speed train.

It is usually quicker by train (if I include getting to an airport, checking in, and landing procedures) and is city centre to city centre.

Never liked flying with civil airlines ,so avoid it if possible .

I have taken to ship travel over airlines. At least you have a room to go to instead of a tiny little seat.

I understand Europe has a pretty good train system.
In the US we have a good one on the east coast but it is still cheaper to fly. Leaving out all the other factors the travel time is one eighth to one quarter of the travel time and costs less money.

Europe is a tiny place in comparison to NA. A long weekend trip to the cottage is the equivalent of driving from the UK to Finland. In Canada just as likely to get travel quoted in hours not miles or klicks.

High speed train would be nice.

times and cost Windsor to Montreal (about equiv of travelling length of UK)
add in airport hassle time and plane not that much of advantage
almost has to cross continental

and no scorpions!

This, or I pay up. I refuse to fly via cattle car anymore.

Ship travel is slower and more expensive than cattle car airplane (I so get that) but I'm talking about pleasure travel. Sometimes the trip is half of the fun.

Have you found a difference between airlines? This week I have certainly noticed it. In all classes (first has been full on all our flights and so we have been seated in the rows behind first which. Gives good opportunity to observe how people are treated in different areas of the plane.

Well yes there is a noticeable difference. They paid at least double and more likely three times what an economy passenger paid. I don't envy the extra service they get. They paid stupid money to get it and if I had it so would I. I should admit I have flown first class several times but other people gave me the upgrade.

On a ten hour flight first class is worth every last penny.

Don't have much choice when you live on an island in the South Pacific.

I'd like to take my daughter to Coachella in 2 or 3 years.

The last flight I took was two months before the 9/11 attacks. After the crap Bush did to make everyone a criminal, I haven't flown since.

Recently I've been driving around large parts of this country. Sure, it takes longer to get where you're going, but when you have up to 8 days of vacation each time, you can see much more. You can enjoy where you're going to, stop when you want, talk or not talk to people and so on.

Unfortunately this means not going to Iceland.
