Whitewashing comments

That's been stated several times in this thread.

Sometimes, a comment might have been deleted, however, other commenters might have reacted to that first comment, and their reactions would still be displayed in the comments section, leading you to notice that something is missing. I've seen it happen, and I know some others have as well.

Forgive me. Its late and I am tired.

I don't get that many comments on my stories and the one's I get, don't seem to create much controversy or conflict.

True. And as also noted, it's a little beyond compulsive to go ballistic over that. It's an amateur writing site, where posters of all ranges of writing ability contribute stories for the possible enjoyment of readers of a whole range of interest--with most of the readers just being after arousing content.

To not only nitpick about those stories (when not asked to do so) but also to roam around doing police work on comments deleted and have a fit over it seems to be going way beyond anal retentive and obnoxious.

There's nothing keeping you from just going on to another story. We have more than a few stories here--some written by masters.

Since I posted already (and I'm trying to distract myself), I might as well state my opinion about the whole thing:

I don't delete comments, with the exception of comments that are spam, or those that are of the one-word insult type and obviously don't have anything to do with the story or my writing abilities. I do that simply because I cannot gain any insight from these comments, they will not be cause for anything constructive, and I find them distracting.

What others do with their comment section is their business. I am aware that many authors do delete constructive criticism because they want to hear nothing but praise or something of the sort. That's their decision, and not mine. It is not within my rights to force them to accept criticism, and I don't give a damn whether or not they are sabotaging their own writing skills by denying themselves this criticism.

It is certainly frustrating to have an insightful comment that took some time to write be deleted, but this is something I am willing to live with because I enjoy being able to moderate my own comments (removing spam etc). That's why I usually only comment on the stories of people I am personally acquainted with. This way, I'll know that my feedback will be appreciated and that my effort will not be wasted.

That's perfectly alright.

I've only once had a story create some sort of controversy, and that was in the German section of the site.

It was an anal how-to. Some commenter decided that it did not belong on the site, despite the fact that there exists, you know, the how-to category. Then there was a big brouhaha about it (well, big for German-Lit standards, anyway).

It was kinda cool to have so much attention focused on a story of mine, as a matter of fact.
