White Guilt

I'm sure some whites feel it. I don't. My concern for minorities is based on pity, not guilt.

There are some people who feel "White Guilt." I am not one of them, for I have never done anything related to race for which I would feel guilty. That's not to say I have led a blameless life, but I have never been any kind of a racist, nor have I ever been a slave owner. I believe none of my ancestors ever owned any slaves, but I can't be certain about that.

In fact, I probably had more slaves among my ancestors than slave owners. For instance, there were my Irish forbears who were sold into slavery by the English
Crown hundreds of years ago. There were also my English ancestors who were slaves in Great Britain for hundreds of years. Bondsmen under the feudal system were not exactly the same as chattel slaves, but the distinction is a minor technical one.

And I am not unique. I expect most white people are descended from people who were held in bondage as my ancestors were. Of course, this ended many years ago, but so did slavery in the USA. I am positive there is nobody around now who was legally a chattel slave or who owned chattel slaves.

Who cares?

Because of who and why you were born you must be guilty.

I say why because of your obvious prejudice.

"You cannot believe in God until you believe in yourself. I am blessed to have so many great things in my life - family, friends and God. All will be in my thoughts daily. "

First time I encountered any of this shit was in highschool. It was sophomore year and this sorta punk kid looked at me and yelled "You are so Guilty of Being White!!" (punk in the 80s sense, he liked the Clash, Iggy Pop, Suxie, blah and dressed like it. I mean I liked the Clash, Iggy Pop, Suxie, Adam Ant, the Ramones, but I didn't need to dress in black and wear eyeliner, Just sayin' )

I did not have the faintest clue, at the time, of what he was talking about. That was 1983.

I don't feel guilty. I have an awareness that being white exempts me from some of the prejudices they have to live with, but that's nothing to feel guilty about. It's not that I'm enjoying a privilege that I'm not entitled too, it's that some arseholes are denying them a privilege that everyone is entitled to. As long as I'm not adding to it, or denying it, or failing to speak up against it when I see it, I've nothing to feel guilty about. Halo intact.

It really shouldn't be complicated.

it's real..

:(

and most of us ARE sorry.

Example.: tanning beds.

Tanning beds? That's about money, not race.
In days gone by, being paler than pale was fashionable. In Ye Olde England, most folks hadn't even seen a black person and it wasn't something they thought about unless discussion turned to the colonies. Pale skin was a statement that you could afford not to work. Most jobs were outside, only ladies of leisure could afford to stay indoors, pale skin was a status symbol.
After foreign holidays became the thing, having a tan was proof you could afford to go lounge on a beach. You had time to lie about, doing nothing productive, just getting that golden glow. That's why it has to be all over. T-Shirt tanlines have never been cool. That and the UV mood boost can be addictive.
