Or in Man-ese, Which one did you hate?

It was The Tommyknockers for me. Scared the everlasting bejeezus outta me. I was so scared after I got done with it I couldn't sleep for three days. I haven't read the thing in about 11 years, maybe less, I can't really remember, but it still bothers me.

The one that was a long short story about a group of people hiding in a grocery store cause there's a bunch of huge bugs outside that came from the atomic power plant up the road was disturbing.

I haven't read any of his books because I find his style of writing hard to get into. Believe me, I tried and I am not saying I don't like his work. A few of the films that they made, were effectivly freaky, so I am sure the content of his writing is worth the read.
Didn't he write The Shining? Now that I should read. That is a frightening film.

Anyway, I am more a Clive Barker girl. really.

Oh KM

you hit my goodie button. I adore SK. The first story that totally scared the be-jeesus out of me was "The Boogeyman" (in "Niteshift" I think) and the other was "Pet Semetary".. the movie was hokey as hell but the book made me sleep with my younger sister for a week.

I rented "Cujo" when it came out on video but stopped play when I saw the dog running through the field with foam hanging out the side of his mouth... fucking scared the shit out of me b/c I'd read the book and knew what was coming up.

"Tommyknockers" was spooky too. I remember reading the initial passage when they went into the woods right before finding the ship? Goosebumps were raised all along my arms!

I remember the grocery store episode that you're referring to but can't remember which story to apply it....

My most favorite stories by SK are the Dark Tower series... that man must complete those stories before he dies!!

None of 'em scared me. In fact, I think that both King and Koontz have gotten TOO tame lately. They printed some good books back in the day, and now they just sell their names.

OMG! Stephen King is the best at scaring the hell out of you in lots of stories! It's too hard for me to really pick just one. 'The Stand' is one that really had chills running down my spine just for the fact that parts of it really are a possibility.

I read The Shining when I was in 8th grade and it scared the shit out of me.

i've read a lot of his books.... anyone ever read Gerald's Game? it puts a strange spin on sex games. I also liked Desperation,IT, and Insomnia. there were a few others I've read... but I can't think of which ones they are right now.

Willing..

but...but.. weren't you disappointed in the ending of "It"?

I mean 600+ pages just to learn THAT?

Give me "Christine" before I read that crap again.

Can't say any of them scared me. The one I enjoyed the most?
"The Body". I also enjoyed the movie adapted from it,"Stand by Me." Made me remember what it was like to be 12.

OMG!! Gerald's game was really something....*shivers* I couldn't even imagine being in that situation!

I adore Stephen King, but none of his books actually ever scared me while I was awake, even in sixth grade, when I first read "Needful Things". But "Pet Sematary" is the only book that ever gave me nightmares (okay, one nightmare). I dreamt that the dead little boy came back to get me! Ahhhh!

He does have an exceptional ability to portray young boys and the comradarie b/w them, doesn't he? I always feel drawn to his characters no matter what the topic, but find myself especially drawn when I'm taken into the mindset of young boys verging on manhood.

He may be another Poe... dishing out novels based upon readership rather than upon literary quality.. but I'm a devoted and loyal fan of King.

IT was the all time most terrifying thing I have ever read-and I was terrified of clowns before I read the story.

The only story that scared the shit out of me was "The Boogyman". I was reading it in bed and when I was done I was going to get up and use the bathroom but the closet door was open just a crack. Took me half an hour before I got the courage to jump up and make a mad dash for the toilet.

The other story I enjoyed the most has to be "The Stand". Everytime I read it it seems everone around me is sick.

Got to be "The Shining". I have never been able to finish that book. I never read "It" but the movie is just about the scariest one ever, I had nightmares for a month.

"The fog" I think it was. The fog rolled in and bugs came with it but I don't remember them being from the power plant. I remember the story not really having an ending!

Easy answer...

The Shining.

I found his later books had lost their edge and were too long. His earlier work though...great stuff.

it really got to me... to the point where i refuse to be willingly bound like that. just the thought of someone dying on me while i'm chained up really freaks me out....

None of them really scared me. But The Shining definatly had more then it's share of creepy moments.

I was around 11 or 12 when the movie was out. So, I really remember what it was like being 12 when I watched that movie. I was so mesmerized by it. I used to have dreams where I was friends with them and went on that adventure too. :)

Also, I was VERY attracted to River Pheonix. OMG! What a sexy male. Such a shame he had to self distruct.

"IT" without a doubt is the only one that gave me the yeeks while i was reading it. The first few chapters about the fair and river...
I also identified with that feeling that adults couldn't save you... I felt like that so many times growing up...

I love king's stuff but it is so accesible that I find myself putting him off in favor of a Douglas Coupland, or even poetry by Hayden Carruth (sp?) thinking there will ALWAYS be time to read King. So I've missed out on alot of his stuff....

Geralds Game definatly freaked me out. Waaaay to possible. The way the husband slowly became freakier really got to me, even though it was basically just the premise. And the whole cutting her finger thing...too gross. I never read IT but I saw the movie , and I'm now terrified of Tim Curry ;)
