As many of you know, my all time favorite element in an erotic story is a doting, sexy genie. After a considerable hiatus from them I have decided to work on another story in which genies play a significant role.

So far, I've been developing the story as an adventure set in a middle-eastern desert region, in ancient times. Magic and mysticism will be a major part of the culture(s) featured. The setting will be a fictitious one and while it may draw upon various actual mythologies from that part of the world, it won't be directly based on the history of any real country in that region.

But then I began to think that the appeal of a genie story probably largely relates to the reader's ability to substitute himself for the master character; to be able to easily imagine that he is the one who suddenly has a gorgeous exotic beauty at his beck and call.

So with that in mind, I'm now wondering if it would be better to write the story in modern times, with the magical elements of the story coming as a shock to people from our secularized society. So I thought I'd get your input on the issue. :)

I don't think there is a "right answer" to this question. Some will prefer one, others will prefer the other.

Personally, I like exotic locales, so I would prefer the magical desert culture. I have no trouble inserting myself into the setting, and I think the newness and differentness of the situation would make it all the more interesting. It would probably help if the main character (other than the genie) was a modern American man, so I could relate to him.

I also think it is easier to suspend disbelief when the surroundings are unfamiliar; you are not surrounded by cues about normal life, so the unnatural things that are bound to occur seem less out of place.

Hmm, you mean an ordinary guy finds himself in Arabian Nights-land with a Genie at his beck and call?

I like the sound of that. As long as there are girls in "harem" outfits. Girls in "harem" outfits are a must.

I'm also working on a genie story, hopefully in time for the Halloween contest.

I gave my genie an olive tan with dark hair...you know, the mediterrian look. But I don't think it really matters.

I Dream of Genie was my favorite show growing up! but I agree with Carne - I like exotic locales, different cultures...
