I have nine stories that are rated 3.xx and one rated at 2.52.

Some of them deserve to be low rated.

Three of them because they are early unrevised stories originally written three years or more ago. Those are 'Stag Party', 'Hen Party' and 'The Procession' which were written for another specific readership.

Two - 'Trapped' and 'Bagged at the Opera' are later works also written for a particular audience and of limited appeal.

'Pleasure Dome' is just odd and based on an old computer game I still have for my IBM XT.

'Muslim Roles' was a competition entry written at speed but the title and the characters put some readers off.

When the Erotic Horror category was first introduced I wrote two stories before the genre was established. They were experimental. 'Donna' is depressing. 'White Scut' is just 'weird' and my lowest rated story at 2.52 having risen from below 2.00. I like them but they will never be popular.

But I am puzzled by the lack of votes for 'The Casbah'. It has only 2 votes and has been stuck at 3.00 for a long time. It is a satire; a pastiche of the Casablanca genre. It has limited sex but I liked it.

How about other authors? Are there stories of yours that seem to have been badly treated by the ratings or lack of votes - not bombings, but simply lower scores than you think your story deserves. The Casbah is the only one of mine that seems out of line. The others I can explain or rationalise but not that one.

Which is your underrated story?

Og

The Striped Shirt is my worst rated. 3.67 or something. But it deserves it. Was my first attempt at erotica and was written first person present tense. All of the others are above 4.5 (if they haven't been bombed again). But my latest has more votes after one day than all my other stories combined.

Actually, After Midnight rather surprised me. While I thought it was good, the plot was a little on the wierd side. Until yesterday it had been at 5.0 for 4 months with 8 votes.

I had a look. I didn't vote or comment but 1st person is difficult to do effectively. I have seen other 1st person stories that don't work as well as The Striped Shirt yet were higher rated. It could be better in third person. Why not edit it and see?

Thanks Og. That one was written on a dare. Literally. Done with it. Time to move on.

My most effective, and certainly the stories I find are my best, are written in 1st person. My lowest scored stories and least effective are in 3rd person. Perhaps because 'wankers' as one friend mentioned, prefer 1st person, or perhaps I just write it well. I know I can write it well, as evidenced with 'The Screening' and 'The Window'.

I prefer not to detach from my main character, and often feel completely detached when writing 3rd person, though I am warming up to it. Perhaps my aversion, my not liking to write 3rd person, my distance comes across in those stories. Nonetheless, some stories must be told that way.

I also have a tendency to switch from 3rd ominscient to limited, which possibly irritates some readers even though the story is well written. 'Raison d'etre', is what comes to mind. I think it is my lowest rated story, but then it is non-erotic, so it doesn't really surprise me that much. 'Tango' is also lower rated, no doubt (as in a tango) because of the swiftness of the sex - which was an accomplishment to me, but disappoited some readers, particularly 'wankers'.

Perhaps, it is the category. Non-erotic doesn't get a lot of readers in the first place, perhaps that can be said for humour and satire as well, Ogg?

Free time is being spent editing uni-tit and olympic stories at this moment, but eventually I will get to 'The Casbah' and check it out. I love humour and satire, particularly where it concerns the Casablanca era, as in the film, since it is one of my favorite points - in film history - anyway.

Hey, Og...

Well, I have 10 stories...

3 of my stories are low rated:

A Rose By Any Other Name -- 4.05
I think this was an okay story...it didn't have any editing, so I think that didn't help much..But I wrote it for the Valentine's Day Contest and I loved the names I gave the characters. I thought it fit.

Away for the Weekend -- 4.13
This was the first story I wrote for Lit. It never got above this score.

My Favorite Christmas Party -- 4.38
It was a fantasy written in the first person. I liked it.

I think that I have gotten better in my writing erotic stories. But I have also learned to send it off to people to edit them. I have trouble with my tenses, because I tend to write the stories in a hurry and write what comes out of my head at that time.

I read, voted and commented on Raison d'etre. I think it is in the wrong category and IS erotic. It is a powerful story and very realistic.

I don't think anything over 4.00 is 'low rated'.

There are a few who can get H on every story but anything consistently rated over 4.00 is a success.

My two worst-rated stories are “Moira Blackmailed” about a woman being forced to have sex with an old bum, and “Judith”, a story written for the 2002 Christmas contest.

“Moira” doesn’t surprise me. It pretty much turned me off when I wrote it, but it was done for someone who requested it and that’s what they wanted. But who wants to read about sex with a dirty old man in a sleazebag hotel? Ugh.

“Judith” deserved better though. It’s a real Xmas story, about a prostitute who works out of the Inn in Bethlehem where Joseph and Mary were forced to bed down, and how she’s redeemed by Christ’s birth. The sex is kind of gratuitous, but I thought the story was genuinely lovely. I guess the idea of putting Jesus and sex together in one story was just too much for some people, but I felt that if Jesus loves mankind, then he’s going to love us sex and all, and it was one of my stories that made me all teary at the end when I wrote it.

I felt so strongly about that theme that I came back to it for the next Xmas story contest and wrote “Santa, Jesus, Rachel, and Me.” That one did better, but it was more surrealistic anyhow. Jesus waited out in Santa's sleigh while the sex went on.

I read Judith.

It is a good Christmas story and has some well drawn sexual scenes. I can't understand why it should be an exception to the run of H s that your stories usually attract.

Judith seems to be an example of the oddity of ratings - a good story that is undervalued.

I totally agree, Ogg.
I read it when first posted, absolutely loved it. A sublime, exquisitely crafted piece.

I have 18 stories posted.

One of these has consistently scored below 4.0, 'The Wedding Night - The Morning After, 3.87,and the second lowest at 4.18, was Summer outing -bathtime.

Both of these stories were sequels. I was advised by several people not to do sequels, as they consistently score badly. I chose to ignore them.

Personally, I like both stories; they are short (most of mine are, my inspiration comes in small pockets). I admit, 'morning after' does have a more than usually amateurish feel to it. One day, time permitting, I may re-write and repost.

But, 'Bathtime', I personally rather like. Apparently the readers did not. But then, everything about this scoring system is a matter of luck. I try not to get to wrapped up in it, but I admit there are times when I am completely comfuzzled at the scoring I do get.

Poetry on the other hand, is a totally different ball game. I have 15 poems posted, and the average scores vary from 2.00 to 5.00 !!! But again, these are much more subjective - the 2.00 score comes from only 2 votes, and the 5.00 from only one vote. I tend to do like the swimming and ice-skating scores.......ignore the lowest and highest, and concentrate on the ones in the middle. :)

I only have 7 stories and one poem. Of those stories the following are low:

You Sometimes Know. This is a continuation of (You Never Know)vella's journey into BDSM. its rated at 3.83. i have to say that i dont believe it was the best but a bit lower than i anticipated in the ratings. I forgot to link it with the first story and i dont know if that had anything to do with the low rate or not.

A Day at the Beach. A very short story about well... me and a desire or day dream i had while reading smut on the beach.
this is at 4.38 which isnt all that bad i suppose.

Malcolm LOL

They didn't like him

Just cause he likes dead people, go figure LOL

:p

Sherman & Sherman

My three-part story, "Sherman & Sherman, Only for Women" has all three parts hovering around 4.0. It got very few reads and votes, probably for two reasons:
1) I put it in the Celebrities category
2) Either no one ever watches the show it was named after and inspired by, or they didn't know from the title that that was what it was about.

It was inspired and modeled after a GREAT TV show called "Berman & Berman, For Women Only, on Discovery Health channel. The first time I saw it, it was about this pretty blonde girl who had never had an orgasm! So, I helped her find how to have one. (And everyone else too!)

the Contest at 4.25 is my lowest rated. My stab at erotic horror and apprently neither stunningly erotic or horrific, but I think it's a good story.

My other two low ones are The long way home (My stab at incest) and Irish Eyes. I can under stand longway being low rated, it's not very well edited. My regular proof readers were a bit put off and I didn't wait for someone who was doing a proof of it for me and perhaps should have.

I don't understand Irish Eyes doing poorly, I think it' sone of my sweeter stories and while the sex isn't all that unusual, I thought it was pretty well done.

I only have four stories posted so far. Although one is in four chapters.

My lowest is my last one, The Dream. I'm not surprised. It was a quick afternoon's work. A dirty little limerick in worship of one of my favourite Litster.

babe. its a great story and i enjoyed it thoroughly.

My worst story is my nude day comp entry 'uni's annual clothing drive'. It has the added bonus of being in the wrong category, having a totally misleading description, and being written in a couple of hours. ie completing deserving of holding the fantastic position of lowest scorer. :D

Mine was an attempt at a whodunit kind of tale with sex, you know, something new. It was called 'Who Killed Grace Winslow,' and it went as low as 3.83. It's funny, but I thought it was a good tale. It obviously wasn't what the public thought though. lol

It wouldn't stop me trying other new idea's though, cause you never know when that latest idea will develope into something better than the norm.

My very first short story attempt, "Submitted for your Approval", has maintained an average of just under 4 for the first chapter, and 4.15 for the second. I can't say I really blame the voters though, because looking back now it is definetly one of my more embarassing ventures. I even recently decided that I am not going to bother finishing it, and it is now in the process of deletion at Lit.

I did pretty good with my second story, "A Compromising Position", even managing an H status the second day it was posted, so I guess I sort of redeemed myself.

Like my stories........

I write. I think 1st person, with stories thrown in.

I will have to figure that out.

21 stories, 19 "H" category level.

Lowest of low is 4.02, a tale about non-consent. Written for a reader, meeting her desires. Oh well. Also interesting, the lowest rated story of non-consent has gotten the most heated, erotic responses in terms of the email feedback received. Most from the ladies. Talk about your creation of desire.....

Next is my only non-H is currently at 4.44, and hopefully climbing. Have to admit I am a ratings whore. I look to meet my needs in writing, and share my stories that bounce around in my head, and must get out.

I adapt occurences from everyday life, make up stories that can incorporate them, and have fun. Most take a day or two at most. Depending on time, thought to submit is 3-4 days. Good, bad, or indifferent, it takes longer to get them accepted.

6-7 stories are now over 200 votes, 2 stories over 70,000 reads. I keep on checking as time permits.

Keep reading. Give me your thoughts!!

Thanks,

Mtn

My worse story is Hell Hath No Fury at 3.73. The worse story I've ever written. I really should delete it. lol It's embarrassing. Out of my 10 stories 7 are H. The two poems I have suck. Maybe the next two will do better.

I only have 10 stories on this site... The Nano entry from last year 'The Not Quite Famous, Slightly Secret Six and a Half' is the lowest rated, (just one chapter of it posted), it stands at 3.80 and has done for ages... but then it isn't a serious story and was written in a hurry, 60,000 words in a month... It's also far too British and in the wrong category, (not my choice), to be understood by other nationals... It's actually higher in the ratings than I'd dreamed it would get. I should really pull it out of the site.

The other 9 all stand above 4... ranging from 4.12 to 4.54 with two above 4.5... unless they've been attacked recently I haven't checked for a while.

None of my stories are intended to be genuine works of erotic fiction... half are mere experiments with dialogue that have surprisingly made it into the top half of the scores table... I write dirty ditties not real stories... I don't have the time or talent to become an author... I wish I did.
