Shhhh ...... don't tell anyone, but I am a closet Barry Manilow fan, although I must confess I've never been to a concert and thrown my pants at him .....

BUSTED!! And it is my lifelong dream to throw my panties at Tom Jones...

Fanfare for the Common Man

Emerson, Lake and Palmer

based on Aaron Copland's work of the same name

it's not a perfect fit, but much of Alice Cooper's School's Out pays tribute to Bernstein's West Side Story. Especially "Gutter Cat Vs. the Jets."

ELO. blechh. sorry. they thrived on blending classical and pop.

Beethoven's 5th leads into "Roll Over Beethoven"

Sad, sad day in Lit land when a legend goes down in flames. j/k:kiss:

we need some prog rock gurus. W hit a couple of them. all those bands were influenced by calssical music. Gentle Giant comes to mind. So does King Crimson.

This may be more up VBEs' alley.

I remember a band called Refugee who were sort of formed out of Nice (I think) and were heavily influenced by classical music but I can't remember any of there tracks or what they were influenced by but maybe someone around here will be able to help out.

I am also Tull counts but who influenced them (or Ian Anderson in particular) I don't know.

Yes definitely and in particular Rick Wakeman. His 6 Wives of Henry Viii for instance - again though I am not sure what or who influenced that.

Actually having posted the above I got to dredging my brain for useless information about Rick Wakeman and recalled that he wrote the score for Ken Russell's Lizstomania film. I can't remember what the music was like but it is bound to have been influenced by Lizst isn't it?

Does that count?

Heyup W !! Refugee had Patrick Moraz in it's lineup - before he took over from Wakeman at Yes. Whilst ELP made Pictures At An Exhibition in tribute to Mussorgsky , Emerson always admitted to being influenced by a plethora of Jazz legends......sign...... I LOVED that band!!

Hello mate, how you doing.

I wasn't sure if anyone else would remember Refugee. I think I am right in saying Ginger Baker was on drums. You are right about Patrick Moraz, I had forgotten all about him.

I had already mentioned ELP and Pictures on this thread. I saw them a couple of times in their early days ....Kieth Emerson always put on a great show.

Hey guys, the original idea of the thread was supposed to be which specific classical track inspired which specific modern day pop/rock song, although a discussion about musicians/bands who are/have been influenced by classical music is no problem for me!

I have been reaffirming my liking of ELP the last few days, playing Pictures at an Exhibition, Trilogy, Brain Salad Surgery, Tarkus, From The Beginning ad infinitum, much to the distress of my kids ..... (what IS all this old stuff, Dad?)

Anybody heard of a Japanese Guy called Isao Tomita? Usually just known by his surname ..... I have an album of his, called "Snowflakes are Dancing", which is entirely based on the music of Claude Debussey ...... he's done other classical-based stuff too, all on synthesisers, but excellent stuff ...... incidentally, I think he did a version of Pictures at an Exhibition also .....

He was bloody marvellous!! :) I saw them at Liverpool , Manchester and London...The Brain Salad Surgery and Tarkus tours were terrific....the sound system they employed was only equalled by Floyd in my opinion. Yes wwre right up there as well and Tull were always great entertainment - Anderson's energy was mindblowing!

I'm fine matey - off to watch some cricket now...SA versus India.....how you doing and was NZ a grand trip....nice lasses down there huh !! ;)

I know that Higher but I have run my knowledge of specific tracks out as have most people it seems so I thought I would try to push others in to thinking about particular bands/people who I know are influenced by classical music.

And no I have never heard of Isao Tomita.
