For my birthday on Thursday I got the 4 disk DVD set of the 1972 Summit Series between Canada and Russia. All 8 games as they were broadcast in the fall of 1972.

Now I was a mere glimmer in my mom's eye back then and all I can compare 1972 with is 2002 ... The situation in both cases is very similar: The majority of the press predicted Team Canada to end up as champions... Both in 72 and '02 Team Canada got off to very slow starts that made the nation as a whole wonder if the right guys were picked to represent this country... The slow start results in fan and media backlash... A team leader steps up mid way through the tournament and gives a very stirring public speach... Millions of Canadians drop everything and tune into the final game which of course is a very dramatic win.

So for those Canadians who were around in 1972.. which tournament was more dramatic or intense? 72 or '02? Was the reaction to the win in 1972 as big and as wide spread as it was in 2002?

I don't suppose they let all the students watch the game huh? :)

That is the one very awesome thing about Canada.. If there is a big final game on TV, everything is stopped.

I remember during the Salt Lake olympics, all work at our store would slow to a crawl because everyone was watching the game on the TV we had. People who worked at other stores beside us would even come in just to catch a look at the score and then report back to their co-workers.

Sorry man, wasn't paying attention in '72..

Too busy getting laid, stoned, and looking forward to Vietnam. I bet you that '72 was more intense, because people weren't P.C. pussies back then! :D

Awww, the good old days!

First off, Happy Birthday, Liontamr!:rose: (December birthdays are great!):D

I was working and trying my hardest to watch as many games as time allowed me.

I remember the excitement of seeing so many NHL stars playing together; these were the players I was rooting for (and against) when I had my Ranger season tickets.

Highlight? Paul Henderson!

Thank you Jenny.. December birthdays are awesome! (even if they do get overshadowed and forgoten by Christmas)

That game 8 was awesome.. And of course Henderson was a big highlight, but man Phil Espisito played a great game as well and saved his best hockey for the third period of that game with a goal and two assists.

L.C: You know it's funny you mention the whole PC crap.. During that game 8 there was an altercation off the ice involving some Team Canada officials and the Russian police... as the officials were helped across the ice to stay on their own bench, most of them flipped off the Russian crowd.

I'm thinking if that happened nowadays it would have been blown up into a huge scandal.

 Happy Birthday Liontamr

1972...... still at school, got my first kiss... he is now a confirmed gay guy, lol

I was stationed at Ubon RTAFB and a year past my tour in Vietnam.

Available sports were the Dallas Cowboys' game and the Miami Dolphins' game -- that's if you were lucky enough to be up in the middle of the night and close enough to an AFRTS station to pick up the signal.

So ... were you in the shit?

Thank you T.H. :D

I figure I missed the 72 series by about 15 years.. I would have remembered it as a 10 year old. I actually remember the 1987 Canada Cup and the big winning goal scored by Lemieux.. I was 9 years old then.

So I guess if you were born around 1960 or so, you may remember it as a Canadian.. any time after and you are just too young. :)

Waiting with the supreme patience I'm well known for (*g*) for my parents to decide to have me after having my brother.

I hope you have a wonderful Birthday, Liontamr.

Had a wonderful birthday.. ;) The Stars / Red Wings game was on that night so I got to enjoy a good meal and watching my favorite team in a classic game against an arch rival. :)

My parents were graduating high school. I wasn't about till 7 years later.

I was the 2 year old crawling around the beaches of Florida, looking for the A-hole that stole my matchbox cars.
