Yahoo! I'm getting laid off (the wrong kind of laid) from a large aircraft manufacturer in the Pacific Northwest. After Dec 14th, I am entertaining the idea of relocating to change my life, as well as improve my economic future.

**Any suggestions? It could be where you live, or where someone told you about.

**If it's where you live, tell me why you like it, and why you think I would like living there.

**Thankyou all in advance for any suggestions.** :D

So Boeing is at it again.

I'd suggest you look at some of studies done i.e. Money Magazine etc. We moved here from Olymia, cost of living is far less, but don't think there are the good paying jobs. I'm retired so it makes a big difference.

Good luck!

I suggest someplace warmer - look out your window LC. Not only is it snowing again this morning, but I heard thunder to boot. Weird weather this year.

Try United Airlines at the Indianapolis International Airport

they just built a huge repair facility there 2 years ago, and have not heard of any layoffs there.

good luck

Sorry to hear the bad news....

Very sorry about the layoff, Lost Cause. I will keep my eyes peeled for you. What type of job are you looking for?

Phantom.

Along these lines, what are the ups and downs of a US citizen living and working in Canada. It seems that there may soon be opportunities for me just a few hundred miles north of me.

I know that the insurance near Vancouver BC is sky high - insurance for my bike would be three times what it is now, I assume car insurance would be as high too.

I know they don't pay as well because cost of living is lower, but I could live on what they would probably pay if there wasn't too many other surprises like the insurance.

How does income tax compare?

The particular company I would be working for would handle all the immigrant worker stuff and I could work there for the next 5 years, which would be fine. I know it is a smidgeon cooler in Vancouver than here, but not bad, and there is some of the best riding on the continent in the summer.

What other things am I not thinking of (I know I would have to leave my firearms on this side of the border - that is not a big deal for me, I rarely go shooting anymore).

FIRST and foremost...I live in Vancouver.... do you need another reason to move here?:D
BC, I know that, but you know I avoid married women like the plague - especially ones that flirt as much as you do. I know they still allow shotguns in Canada and I don't want to have one two inches from my face - uh uh! No thanks.

LC--What about Atlanta? Warm weather and jobs aplenty for the skilled. Plus the food isn't all that bad either.:)

Atlanta is a good idea...my SO was down there for awhile and that's all they have is jobs jobs jobs :) Whatever you do don't move to Northeastern Kentucky unless your bringing jobs with you...I can't get a job at all here...unless your wanting a career with McDonalds and I've hated working fast food since I was a teenager...

I'm being very mercenary at this point. I will work for whomever pays me the most, and live where they need me to be. I have my application in with Lockheed-Martin for that new strike fighter. That means Georgia, Texas, or CA. I hate leaving friends and family, but like everything, it's an exciting adventure!

*I have military experience primarily in counter-terrorist ops.
*Last lay-off, I took a year of computer stuff in college.
*I know how to talk to people, as well as silence them.
*I play well with others.
*If needed, I can play doctor too! :D

STG's dilemma has got me on the move again! My memories of CA. keeps me longing for warm climes. I don't care what I do as long as I can have a roof, grub, and gas for Thunderbritches!
I've got extended family all over CA., and want to "hang" at Blacks Beach again!
I have the same problems;
**-'s
*Leaving people I enjoy being around.
*Leaving my basic family area - Mom, Dad, and Bros.
**+'s
*Sunshine
*Skin
*New landscape
*New loves
*Sun!
*Sun!
:D

Nothing on your plus list would overcome the loss of people mentioned in your negatives list. For me, anyway.

I would, and have, turned down a transfer to a sunny location in a heart beat if it meant leaving behind the things most important to me in the world.

BC or Bust

Having lived in the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley, I found:

1) Air Care of vehicles becomes an annual headache.

2) Yes, insurance is high. Gas prices are also a thorn in my side.

3) BC bud is probably the best in the world.

4) Ski in the morning, wind surf in the afternoon!

5) Air quality in the valley CAN be a cause for concern if respiratory problems are an issue.

6) Unions and the government = constant fighting

7) Health care system is somewhat mixed up ( you must be 9/10's dead before the hospitals will let you in the door

8) Beer is much better, but the price will shock you!

All in all, I love to visit, but will have a tough time returning to live if I must...
