Some while ago I mentioned to The (Earl) an arguement we had about humour. It was the first time we'd conversed at Lit. and was 5 years ago. He said he couldn't remember.

I've been perusing old threads that I contributed to (by looking at 'List subscriptions' in user control panel) and found the actual thread. Similies - fill in the blank. So there's that. I'm linking it so that The can see.

Another reason I'm linking it is as proof positive, undeniable, indefatigable that the AH was a much nicer place in the old days.

Remember WildSweetOne? Svenska? Maths? Openthighs Sarah? SMUK? Uther Pendragon? B. Keeney? Gabriel Lee? Octavian? Muffie? Thesandman? JFinn? DVS?

Mine and The's arguement begins on page three, and will make Roxleby positively green with envy at the courteous, civil and above all 'gentlemanly' conducting of quite a torrid debate.

I  WSO and her many and varied 'writerly' threads and excercises.

I also  the past and my 'youth'.

I found the AH in time to know many of these people, but I wasn't around for that thread.

I do think that we are victims of growth in some ways. Not all of the change has been positive, by any means.

But how to change things now... that I don't know.

I don't know what Roxanne's complaining about. She makes it very clear that people who don't agree with her across the board are not worthy of consideration.

And after she revealed her opinion on the place of the mentally ill in the world she imagined, "The mentally ill should not be allowed to have children. The mentally ill should not be allowed to have relationships. The mentally ill should not be allowed to have jobs.", well, being mentally ill myself, I'm not likely to think highly of her.

Things change, and aren't that different. There's always been tension here, and warmth. People coming and people leaving. It's just the way things are in a place as busy and diverse as this.

I remember that thread. :rose:

But don't you remember how it was four years ago around this time? The majority of the threads were devoted to the U.S. Presidential election, it was nasty and divisive and we had flame ups daily.

Everyone was in a pissy mood and it lasted for months. People complained all of the time about how this place was no fun and about how there were no more writerly threads.

It got better.

I remember most of the people, I don't remember the thread.

Back in those days, Gauche used :rose:'s

Swings and round-a-bouts, we could use less bouts and invite people round more; it'll pass... it always does, but I'll try to be extra nice next time a newbie needs scragging.

I wasn't here four years ago--but was anyone asking "the question" then given a full group razzing? That seems to have subsided within the last couple of months, so that's at least better.

MathGirl did the honors... until she retired. It was a kind of ritual... if anyone asked The Question we all stood whistling with our hands in our pockets till MathGirl turned up. She had a sidekick DurtGirl... but you really don't want to go there.

MG's wild dictionaries would be worth digging out :D

Well, we can bitch & moan about how much better things used to be -- or we can apply those energies toward making today better.

I vote for the latter.

Nice to see you again, gauche. :rose:

The original idea was that "The Question" would be answered sensibly and then be followed by the facetious answers, of which MathGirl's were the most inventive.

Og

Me too. How's the head? <soothing scalp massage>

Anyway you slice it, it is making "home group" fun at the expense of someone asking a simple question--a question that has never been accurately answered by the Web site FAQs as long as I've been posting stories here. And it is an index to the "openness" of the forum. As I said, it seems not to have been in evidence much the last couple of months--so that's good.

The head is pounding -- and the fact that the air conditioning unit has to be replaced is not helping.

I'm desperately trying not to slip into a foul mood.

<mmmmm> Thank you!

The appearance of 'The Question' as a limited entity was brought into existence as a method of defusing a response of 'Fuck Off and read the answer in the FAQs'.

It reverted rather quickly (after Maths left) into a 'fuck off' response rather than a humorous welcome.

Which happens to be the 'tribal' response in RL. So, no difference there.

The problem with being a noob is that you either jump in and show willingness or believable authority or get scared off.

Otherwise you watch and learn or befriend a singular member of the group/tribe before you ask or state anything.

It's not an easy thing to learn, it's like going to 'big' school all over again.

I vote for a time machine.

Nice to see your face for once.

I can dig it.

I've tried to enter into the BDSM Forums on a couple of occasions. Not a pleasant experience either time.

I think it kind of depends on how it's handled. I first saw "The Question" asked by another newbie while I lurked. That time, at least, it seemed like everyone was making clever digs at the website, so it felt welcoming. Sort of like we're all in this together, laughing with the newbie rather than at him. It was also part of a newbie thread, so there were all sorts of questions being asked there that were fascinating for the newcomer and old hat to the rest of you. I've seen other newbies greeted with a too much snark and clannishness. A gentle but funny welcome is part of what made me want to stick around.

The problem by the time I started posting stories here, was that the FAQ was off by at least four days. So it wasn't at all unreasonable for someone to ask "the question" even if they'd asked the FAQ. And by then, group razzing anyone new was more fun than actually figuring out that they had a good reason to be asking the question.

Or someone like Glyndah makes it a point to make all the newcomers feel welcome. Drawing a newcomer in to a conversation is a great way to ease them in.

Yes, you're quite right but mood and timing counts for a lot too. The mood of the first person to answer and the timing of putting the question.

My advice to noobs. Don't ask anything until you're sure America is asleep.

That way, even if you get razzed it will be by cultured and sophisticated Asian/European/oceanic wits and I guarantee you won't feel a thing.

Ah, yes, that makes perfect sense.
