When does posting become so personal that it can really fuck up someones life based upon a topic on a board...

I've had to do some house cleaning myself today at my own board because some stuff was said that could really cause problems for someone and i'm curious as to where the line is drawn when it comes to posting...

Is there really a line that can't be crossed or do we always draw a new line in the sand and see who will cross that...

I would think you would start out at the line where you could be sued. There are laws you have to follow when running a community on the internet. Then work from there based on what kind of community it is, and your own moral standards.

For my money you draw one line. Never do it lightly. Never draw one you are going to abandon. Never draw a line if you aren't going to, or don't have the power or fortitude, to back it up. Be ready to defend it to the end, no matter the cost. To me drawing a line is tantamount to putting your back in a corner and preparing to fight to the end.
There are other ways to get around that type of mind set. Negotiation, discussion, listening, talking, attempting to communicate. Those work 99% of the time.

Comshaw (trying to find the owner of the damned box he just got off from)

The line from my view has always been No Personal, Private information. You want to call Person A an idiot, a dope, a moron, a loser, a bitch, a slut, whatever, go ahead. However, if you then proceed to explain why Person A is an idiot, a dope, a moron, a loser, a bitch, a slut, whatever, based on this private email or these facts about their personal lives, then you've crossed the line. That way, we can all feel free to say whatever we like without putting each other in danger of being discovered on a porn site by our family or stalked by psychos.

Beyond that, I don't care. If people want to argue, pig-fight, name-call, mud wrestle, etc. they can go ahead. I'm not going to force anyone to 'be nice'. Neither will I jump in to protect anyone who picks a fight and finds out they took on more than they could handle. I'm no one's Mom. All I ask is that they keep real names and private info out of the posts.

I'l like to answer because you've been posting lucid, intelligent topics lately that deserve sober, articulate responses with a bygones approach to the past that I find encouraging and hopeful, but I still think you're a big fat doody-head, so I won't.
