My first rap album on a major label drops later this year.

Hammering out distribution deals now...

Where do you buy your music?

What do you think of Tidal?

Unless the artist themselves produced the album I don't buy it.

Otherwise I just steal it from Sony and hit the merch table at the shows.

Good thread Lance.

I just heard about Tidal last night and seems a little pricey. I use Pandora and Spotify through my Boxee apps streaming to my home system. I just spent the $4.99/month to get HiFi Pandora tunes with less "breaks" and better sound.

I'll pay for music, but I'm with Botany about how to spend my $$$. I listen to a lot of shit not found in packages. Like I'll pay for the new Built to Spill and De La Soul joints.

Amazon, mostly because we have a prime account and get a lot of free streaming music and video along with the shipping advantages.

I'm lame about my Prime. I only take advantage of the free shipping and haven't even tried the movies or music. Might hit you up for some tips.

ETA: Tidal looks and feels just like Spotify with a bigger price tag. Oh, and Beyonce has a featured channel? NO WAY! Gee, wonder why.

I always buy, never steal, because I am not a cheapass motherfucking thief like the guy a few posts above. Intellectual property should be bought. We have a great tradition in this country of paying artists a pittance for their work and I personally think they oughta still get a slice of the pie, no matter how much the internet has fucked that for some people (yet it has revealed opportunities for so many others who never would have had a shot with the record label system).

I have multiple sources, but if I like a band enough, I buy a CD at one of the last indie music shops in town (Record Store Day is April 18 this year) or at the artist's website. Amazon or iTunes if that is the only place where it is available.

Exactly this. I can't wait for RSD! I'm glad indie bands are using it as a vessel.

We cut the cable TV cord almost a year ago. Mostly we watch streaming video through a Roku. If there are television series that we want to watch we usually just buy the whole season on Amazon. Between Amazon Prime and NetFlix even purchasing the television shows that we want to watch (Big Bang Theory, Supernatural, etc.) we save a ton of cash since we're not paying $90 every month for 150+ channels and a DVR that we almost never used.

All our shops have special releases and deals planned, I am all squeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!

We only have one kick-ass store left and a few wannabe's. I'll send you a PM of the cool one. BTS is coming out!

I have a Boxee and need to look into this. Right now between interwebs and cable I'm over $150/month! My problem is I'm a sports freak and NFL & MLB are gearing up as well as hockey playoffs. Ooooof!

My wife just bought the new Rhiannon Giddens album Tomorrow Is My Turn from Amazon. Loves it. So do I. Rhiannon can do no wrong in my book.

I have the same problem. I cut the cable a couple of years ago.. Then when football rolled around I was all.... Uhhhhhhh fuck.. So I had the brilliant idea to go to my friendly neighborhood pub and watch my sporting events. I ended up blowing more money at the bar than I would of with the cable. And not to mention was a slobbering drunk all weekend.

On topic.. I have been guilty of stealing my fair share of music and movies. No more. I stopped my pirating ways when I let a local musician friend move into my basement a few years ago. I now either purchase digital downloads directly from the artists site or as close as I can get or buy the vinyl copy. I'm done with cds. Fore ev ER!

I buy music CDs and DVDs from Charity Shops and Boot Fairs, and for very specialist classic music from online retailers of obscure labels.

Edited for:

I used to buy my CDs from a specialist local shop, but they closed the shop two years ago. Their now nearest branch is ten miles away, parking is very expensive and difficult, so I buy from HMV for my eldest daughter's obscure requirements. We walk in, find a sales assistant, show him/her our daughter's list and watch as we go to sections labelled with terms we don't understand.

We usually end up ordering her needs from Indie labels...

Amazon, HMV,independent shops or when possible direct from the artist.

Spotify for the big label stuff, wherever the artist wants me to buy for small labels and indies. Most seem to like Bandcamp.

All digital. Haven't bought a CD since 2009.

Bandcamp is awesome.

Where do you buy your music?
The thrift store or swap meets.

Who?

Well...
Concert receipts and lifetime royalties are where the money is at, also cross/corporate promotion.

Also:
The Constitution of the United States of America:
Article 1, Section 8:
"To promote the Progress of Science and useful Arts, by securing for limited Times to Authors the exclusive Right to their respective Writing and Discoveries;"

...so, fuck 'em. If (an) artist(s) can't make $ performing, then they should quit, get more talent, or put on a better show.

Think about it, if someone gives you a CD, do you have to buy it for the second time to own the license when concert tickets are $50+?

At shows, from the band's website or record stores. I have free version of spotify and I surf to YouTube.

No to mention when you buy a CD in the first place, if it comes from a major label the artist isn't getting shit out of it except promotion....

Really?

I would much rather sell 1,000,000 units through Sony for 80 cents a unit than sell
1,000 units on a card table in pubs for 15 dollars each.

80 cents is about 79.9 cents too much credit for Sony.

Seriously, unless you're one of the hand full of insano mega pop performers of the year you really don't have any bargaining power with the big companies and they just aren't going to pay you shit for making you famous and pushing your stuff. All but the biggest pay their bills with ticket and merch table sales...not record sales. Record sales get record companies paid, not musicians.

Most artist are fine with it though because not many companies can put your name out and push your shit like Sony, Universal etc. can. fill that stadium up for your tour so you can make your money and start your own record label.

i used to buy crap off of itunes, but then i had a couple downloads that just simply didn't work and they did nothing to fix it so fuck that nonsense.
