The Story
The world was a lush place where magic and science lived in harmony. The head scientist Dr. Rialtar was a wise jolly fellow. The high mage however was power hungry and ambitious. The races were ruled by one, the Djinn. The Djinn were a wise and beautiful Race. Their features well defined and their hair as black as the night. They ruled over the land with fairness and kindness. They were loved by all and peace filled the land. Then the dark age began. The high mage known only as Lucien became angry with the Djinn. He despised the power they held over him and all. He believed he would be more fit to hold that power. He also despised science, magic users should be above the lower beings known as scientists. So he began to build an army. Using his mastery of the dark arts he created horrible monsters. No one knew of his betrayal, his decieving skills incredible. It took him ten years to build a sufficient army. He had underground tunnels dug to every major city. Except that of the Djinn who lived far to the north. Then one night while billions of happy villagers slept unaware Lucien struck hard. Creatures poured from beneath the earth horrible screams their excuse for a battle cry. Lucien's army slowly and surely destroyed anyone and anything in it's path. That night and the following month Lucien whiped out almost the entire population. His hunger to rule became a hunger for revenge. The Djinn had sensed an evil rising and as soon as news of the attack reached them they sent their army out. The battle that ensued was bloody to say the least. The two armies collided on a large field. Many more battles followed that one until finally the Djinn were victorious. The war had gone on for ten years. Ten years of absolute hell. After the war the Djinn imprisoned Lucien in the ice caves deep within the barren ice feilds with a magic barrier so strong they believed it to be unbreakable. After the war ended it was found that only two races remained. The human race and that of the Djinn. The human's were the founders of science as the Djinn were the founders of magic. It was decided then that the two did not mix and would only cause future pain. So the high council of the Djinn gathered on the full moon on the feild where the war had begun and with one large burst of all their power combined they split the world in two. A world of science that became known as Earth and a world of magic that became known as Athkatla. Now in the present day and age the two worlds known nothing of eachother. Stories of magic on Earth are myths as are stories of science in Athkatla. A new evil is rising however. This evil originates from Athkatla and despises the world of science more then anything. His one desire is to unite the two worlds and enslave the human race. He has already begun by kidnapping a few of the world leaders and replacing them with magical gouls that do his bidding. His plans are set in a motion and soon the dark age shall return!

Nalia

Nalia gasped as she sat up straight in bed her heart pounding loudly in her ears. She had just seen the most horrible things. All in her dreams. Yet they didn't seem like dreams, they seemed like something alot more potent. Something like a vision. Tears formed in her eyes as she shook her head in denial. She had seen the destruction of all that she held dear. The distruction of not only the world she loved but the world she sought after so tenaciously. The world of the humans. She had seen a horrible shadow fill the land and a loud authoritive voice speaking an acient cantation in the old language. She couldn't make out the words but as the man spoke the ground had begun to split apart, explosions erupted in all directions. Screams of agony assaulted her ears. And one man stood in the center of it all. A bemused look upon his face as he watched his handwork. She could only make out his slender form. His features were blurred. Nalia shook her head coming out of her flash back. She had once in a while dreamt the future. She could never induce these visions but they came nevertheless. No one ever belived her, no one wanted to. She was the odd one, the one everyone thought wasn't all that right in the head. Well that may be but it didn't matter now. She had one goal now. She had been given the responsability of stopping this vision from comming to be. She wouldn't fail, she would show everyone that she was truly worth somthing. But right now Nalia decided she needed her beauty rest. With a determined look still on her face she drifted off into a restless sleep.

Darius

Darius sighed as he gazed at the night sky. He felt alone at the moment. More so then he had in a long time. Darius was the heir to the Athkatla throne. He was a strong warrior and a great mage. Yet thats all people saw when they looked at him. Only his sister Nalia knew the true him. The compassion for all beings, the need to protect his people at all costs. He loved his sister but he still felt hollow. The Djinn royalty was looked at with pride and confidence. They were revered, but never truly loved. With another heavy sigh Darius turned to his bed determined to get some sleep tonight.

Krat

Krat, or, as his superiors often called him, 'Big Boy', had been ordered to guard the sleeping chambers tonight, as the normal guard had come down 'sick'. Krat was a large, muscular Djinn, odd in a species so focused on magic. But his magic was limited, and so he played upon his strengths, the seeming stupidity many took for granted and his sword.

Besides, who would dare attack their royal highnesses? It was joked that working the night shift was to guard against Princess Nalia's nightmares. He sighed, shifting position. And then he heard it, the laughter of the guards making their rounds, more to ensure that the torches stayed lighted in case someone needed to make a late night trip than to guard against intruders.

They came to a stop before Krat. He stood a head over one, and the other was a few inches shorter. Both had the more lean frames of people whose skills were more towards magic than swordsmanship. "Well," said the shorter of the two, "if it isn't Krat. Guarding well against bad dreams, Big Boy? Heh, you know, I hear his name come from the old language word for 'dying light'."

Krat's eyes stared forward, ignoring the banter of the two as they continued to berate him. After a while, infuriated he would not respond, the small Djinn laughed heartilly, and lead the other guard off to complete their rounds.

Krat frowned, looking at the double doors leading to the hall containing the rooms of the royal family. He thought of Nalia's dream. Others scoffed, but he worried. She was so different. Others laughed at her differences, but he wondered, why was she different? Things did not happen without reasons.

Nalia paced back and forth muttering under her breath. It was late in the afternoon and she still handn't left her room. She had to much to plan, to much to think through. She heard a knock on the door interupting her musings. "M'lady?" a tentative voice called. "Come in Mariet" she called to her maid. Mariet was a timid Djinn, quiet and unsure of herself. She was Nalia's close friend. She didn'nt even seem to notice the differences in the princess. Yet she insisted upon calling her M'lady. Unknown to most Mariet was very intelligent and kind. But something had happened to her in the past, something she wouldn't even tell Nalia. She merely withdrew into herself if it was mentioned. Now she was glancing almost shyly into Nalia's room. She entered at Nalia's invitation. "M'lady I was worried. You did not appear for breakfast. Is something amiss?" Another unique about Mariet was her voice. It was soft and quite melodious. Nalia had only gotten her to sing once and it had been something you don't forget. She smiled at Mariet her eyes alight with her new plans. "I had another dream Mariet. I finished the warning, it finally played through." Nalia spoke quickly, anxious to tell her friend all she wanted to do. Mariet stood quietly listening to her explanation. She was used to Nalia's excited explanations. She was always excited about one thing or another. It was infectious. "There is a great danger to our world Mariet, and another world." Mariet knew all about her mistresses obssession with the science world of Earth. "Mariet I have to save us. No one will believe me here, they know me. They all think my prophecies hallucinations. But if I were to get to the human world. The world of science, they would not spurn me. There has to be a warrior their that can help us. I have heard rumors of a portal spells. That's where you come in" Mariet eyes had widened when she realized her mistress really meant what she was saying. Nalia continued on with her plan "I need you Mariet to distract that gaurd outside the royal rooms. I believe his name is Krat or something." Mariet spoke up then "A man? I cannot talk to men. You know how I freeze up, the fear chokes me..." she shook her head. "Mariet please try. I must get into my fathers presonal library. I can't be seen or there will be to many questions. If my family hears of this one then they'll lock me away for sure." Mariet was still focusing on her mistress her eyes lost in thought. "I'm not crazy Mariet, don't back out on me now." Mariet finally nodded her agreement. "I still don't know about the man thought. Who did you say it was?" Nalia frowned "His name is Krat. Beyond that I don't know." Mariet grimaced "Your not helping M'lady." Nalia sighed "It'll work out Mariet. Now sit let me fill you in on the details." Mariet sat down next to Nalia and they decided they would go through with it that night.

darkness

It took a great deal to stretch so far. The chasm was wide, and powerful. But so was he... so was he. Soon, his time would be at hand.

Already, some worked for him, although most did not know of it. Whispers heard in the dark, thoughts in there head they believed to be there own. Ideas...

Each one a step forward... a step closer to his goal.

He stretched furthur... and connected...

Jacob Cobb sat up suddenly, woken from another nightmare, covered in sweat. He scrubbed at his eyes with his fists, wiping away the last vestiges of sleep, and with it any remembrances of the dream that had plagued him. He looked at the clock, and cursed when he saw the flashing clock face.

"Another goddamn power failure. Un-fucking-believable."

He jumped out of bed, and strode to the closet, grabbing the ususal businessman uniform: suit, tie and shirt, and over-shined shoes. He dressed quickly, brushed his teeth and left, not bothering to do more with his hair than run his fingers through it. It's unruly curls never lasted more than an hour or two anyway, unless covered with enough hair gel to tax an oil tanker. Besides, he was late. And he hated being late.

About twenty minutes later his car pulled up to the door of the office building, uptown on E 55th, and the driver jumped out of the car to open his door. He was already on his way, however. It was possible that the company could get along without him, but he doubted it. He walked briskly through the lobby, barely acknowledging the calls from the people he passed, and entereed the elevator. He surprised himself by punching button 55 instead of 70, but for some reason didn't make the correction. He might as well go see the old man before the meeting, he thought to himself. Go see him, and his experiment.

The old man had brought the idea to him quite some time ago, and for some reason Jacob had given him the green light for the project. The partners were sceptical, but jacob's track record was impressive, and it had earned him a bit of leeway as far as most were concerned.

The elevator stopped on the 55th floor, and he stepped off, walking past the two burly security guards, and into the laboratory. He found the old man huddled over a mass of papers, as usual. He looked up when he heard Jacob enter.

"Ahhhh, Jacob!" The man's wrinkled, prune-like face brigtened. "I had hoped you'd stop by today!"

jacob nodded, and answered. "Any breakthroughs?"

"Oh yes!" He frowned slightly, "I think so, anyway..."

"Anything you can explain quickly?"

The old man's face seemed to cave in on itself, as he puckered. "Science cannot be explained quickly."

"There are some here, who wouldn't call what you're doing science." He held up his hand to forestall the indignation he saw forming on the old man's face. "I'll be back in an hour, and you can explain, then, fair?"

The old man nodded, and bent back over his work.

Jacob shook his head, and walked back toward the elevator. Crazy old fool, he thought, I don't know why I even bother to keep you around.

He briefly thought about not showing up in an hour, but quickly dismissed the idea.

He'd be back. He had to be.

"enough lurking around this Nalia seems the one to talk to if what the rumors say is true, she'll be the one most willing to listen."

Thought and action being one the same to her the invisible unseen Aann takes wing and heads towards the palace. Expecting no trouble gaining entrance Aann flies straight towards Nalias bedroom.

* THUNK *

* Flash *

" OW, God damn window is shielded "

Aann Flutters outside the window Taking a look at the spell shield that is still making her wings tingle

" INSECTS AND BUGS" " INSECTS AND BUGS " Aann Curses "do i look like a .." suddenly the ridiculousness occurs to her as funny and she is overcome with laughter " ha ha *snort* ha ha " she hovers there laughing so hard she cries.

It was early evening Mariet was out running an errand for Nalia. Nalia was rummaging through her closet looking for her black form fitting suit. It would be perfect for the mission that night. She was practically giggling with anticipation when she heard something hit her window barrier. Frowning she stood up her gaze on the window. Normally she wouldn't notice something hitting the barrier but whatever had just hit it was bigger then an insect. Without even a thought to her safety Nalia walked to the window and opened it. She noticed a small figure with shining wings. A faery? They were supposed to be extinct. Nalia's eyes lit up at this discovery and curiousity instantly seized hold. "Are you a faery? Who are you? and what are you doing at my window?"

Krat

He arrived, as usual, an hour before shifts changed. It was still early evening, and the royal family was still awake, so there were two guards to tend to any late needs that may come up. In an hour, they'd close the doors and turn it over to him.

Both of them lazed about in the normal, uncaring fashion, watching a few of the later female servants as they cast a few polishing spells, keeping the halls clean. Krat leaned against the wall opposite them.

They didn't glance at him. He'd been pulling this duty all week, and after the first two days they'd eventually given up ever pulling him into a conversation. They'd came to the same conclusion everyone had, that he was simply too dull to comprehend beyond basic orders.

That suited him well. Let them think what they would. But, much like what ew magic he could create, it was all illusion.

Aannealliea Katrina du' Chaunsion

having forgotten where she was for a minute Aann is startled by Nalia's Question "Are you a faery? Who are you? and what are you doing at my window?"
She is also suprised to be seen having thought she couldnt be seen but it is entirely possible that the spell shield could have disrupted her invisibilty.
All this goes through her mind in the second it takes to stifle her laughter.
"umm did you say your window, then you must be Nalia." "thats perfect just who i came to see"
she goes on to fast for any reply, having planned this out over and over to herself.
"theres something you have to know about, its very important and ..." she stops for a breath and starts over.
"yes i am a faery, a pixie to be exact, my name is Aannealliea Katrina Du' Chaunsion, And i have something very important to tell you about. Can I come in?"

Nalia studied the faery. She had read they were only trouble. Always getting into things. Oh well, might prove interesting she thought to herself as she motioned for the pixie to enter. Suddenly her bedroom door opened and Mariet entered her face flushed her eyes alight. "I'm ready when you are. Everything has..." she trailed off when she saw the faery. She blinked once then smiled "Hello there, you would be a pixie I believe. It's nice to meet you." Nalia glanced at Aannealliea "Well you wished to tell me something?" she asked her eyes alight with curiousity.

Aann takes a moment to organize her thoughts.
"well long story short, something very bad is happening here and other places."

"let me tell you a little bit of history first"

Aann tells Nalia about how the faerys had a magic to take themselves and a few others outside of time and space to another place, how they knew something bad was coming before the last BIG war. how they gathered those who believed and left the world to fend for itself.

She tells of the way when the world was split the otherwhere maintained a connection to both worlds.

And then she tells of a Dark Force Coming through her land, of unexplained deaths in a place where death isnt supposed to be possible, of seers with visions remarkably like those those that drove them to hide from the world in the first place.

She answers questions along the way making sure Nalia understands that the People where she comes from believe evil the likes of which hasnt been seen for a very long time threatens both worlds and her home.

"and so I've come to you to warn the Djinn and offer what aid i can when and if anything is to be done."

"what will you do Nalia, if you cant help can you at least help me find someone who can do something about this?"

Nalia shrugged "of course I'm going to do something about all this but I can't do it here." She shook her head "If any of the royal family found out about this they would put us all away." Nalia appeared sad for a moment but the look was gone before anyone could be sure it had been there. "I do know what to do however. The human world of Earth holds the key I am sure of it. I need to find a way to travel safely between worlds. The exact spells I need are in my fathers personal library. He calls the books fairy tales but I know they are the key to the other realm." She mischieviously looking at Mariet "My friend here is going to distract the gaurd in about ten minutes and I am going to sneak into my fathers library. Then we can figure out where we want to go from there." She looked at the pixie. "I think it best you stay here. A Faery, I mean Pixie such as yourself would cause quite the unroar in the palace. We will be back as soon as possible." Nalia's gaze met Mariet's "begin the distraction. I will wait a short time then leave." Mariet nodded sending one last curious glance at the pixie befor leaving the room.

Mariet

She studied the gaurd for a moment. He didn't seem aware of her. I can do this she thought silently to herself. She took a deep breath and approached the gaurd. "Hello" she said softly surprised her voice didn't shake. She could feel a blush creeping up her neck at that one word. This was harder then she thought. Her heart was pounding and she felt the urge to run but she refused to give into fear. Nalia would be proud of her. "My name is Mariet. And you are?"

Krat

He glanced over as someone approached. After barely a second, his eyes returned to their blank stare, looking beyond the world around him, yet somehow seeming to still be attentive to the doors he was guarding. It was just Nalia's maid.

"Busy," he gurnted out as she asked who he was. He didn't bother to even glance in her direction as he said it, as if spitting out the answer. It had a finality about it, as if with that word he ceased to notice her existance.

Mariet

When the gaurd merely grunted an answer not even glancing at her Mariet felt anger well up inside of me. Talking to him had taken so much courage on her part and he was just going to brush her off? Not if she had something to say about it. "My aren't you the rude one. Is that the way you talk to a lady?" She boldly tapped him on the chest "I was only being polite." She was determined to get some kind of reaction.

Krat

He didn't even bother to look at her again as she tapped his chest. His entire manner informed that he didn't care about being rude, or, rather, that he had no idea she was even still there. It was a carefully controlled motion.

In fact, but for the fact he was solid, he would probably appear to be an illusion. Many times, it seemed that his bulk was the only thing that really existed.

Mariet

Mariet felt a frustration form in her breast. Maybe he was deaf? "There has to be a way to get some reaction out of you." She studied him critically. He was a tall one that was for sure, his eyes were void of emotion. He could have easily been a statue. He appeared dumb, but she doubted he truly was. She was becoming more and more determined to get a reaction out of him. She waved her hand in front of his face "I know someone's in there. May I speak with him please?

Nalia

Nalia tapped her foot impatiently watching Mariet talk to the gaurd from a distance. The man just stood stare his eyes dull. Was he deaf? He didn't even seem to know Mariet was there, even when she tapped him on the chest. Nalia shook her head. She had to get to her fathers library unseen! Mariet had to get the gaurds attention. Or maybe... she looked Aann "Aann you can turn invisible right? Thats why I didn't see you right away at my window?" she smiled "Krat is a gaurd, if he hears an unusual sound he'll go check it out. I want you to head down the hallway and create some disturbance, then turn invisible and come back here. I'll head to the library when he leaves to investigate. What do you think?" she bit her lip eager to get ahold of those books.

Aannealliea Katrina du' Chaunsion

"easily enough done"
Suddenly Aann just isnt there, with a whisper quiet whirr of the wings shes out the room and down the hall.
A small cantrip later and theres a flash and the distinctive ring of steel on steel from just around the nearest corner.
"That ought to get some attention" Aann thinks to herself.

...darkness...

So close now, he could taste it... the chance to actually set foot on solid ground would again be at hand. No more of this darkness, no more straining for the light, no more powerlessness.
Soon all would be as it once was, soon, all would be his.

But for now, he stretched...

And found himslef in the waking world. Out of some long dead instinct, he drew in a breath, or tried to. He wasn't really here, he told himself for the twentieth time. Just his... consciousness.

He walked forward, even though that, too, was unnecessary. He had no physical body, after all. Not here at least.

It was still a dangerous time for him. he was weak, and vulnerable. But he needed to feed, to regain some of what was lost. So he searched for a victim among the lands of the Djinn...

Krat

Krat heard the distinctive sound of steel on steel. He didn't bother turning his head. There were no cries, no sounds of alarm. Not even the telltale ripple of war magic tripping the magical sensors around the palace. The only solution left was that it was a few of the guards, horsing around. And what if it was an attack? They would come to him.

He unsheathed his greatsword, hefting the blade up and letting it rest against his shoulder. He turned his head, away from the maid and the sound, toward where Nalia hid. He blinked a few times, then brought his gaze back around.

He sighed heavilly, and, without looking towards the maid, he began to speak. "Talk? Fine, what do you want to talk about? Would you like to tell me you're attracted to me, even though this is the first time you've shown any interest in me? Perhaps you'd like to gossip instead? Perhaps tell me why Princess Nalia had you make such an obvious attempt to have you distract me? Or perhaps how the Princess, being a member of the royal family, can go wherever she pleases, as long as she takes at least one guard with her? She is, after all, the Princess. She can order any guard to do whatever she pleases, considering her father does not bother giving orders to us himself anymore, and she has more power than the Captain of the Guards who orders us around. Maybe you could tell me why she's being so devious when, strictly bound by my oath to serve the royal family, she can order me to do whatever she wants?"

His eyes turned to face the maid. "Or are you really just that hard up to find a conversation? Perhaps you want a lover? I'm afraid I'd do horribly in both areas, as I really don't care about you."

Nalia

Nalia heard the entire thing...

She scowled, she was being devious because if her father or mother heard anything about her being in their personal library they would want to know why. Then what was she supposed to tell them? They both thought her visions and nightmares mere psycotic episode. She was sure to get locked away if this came out. Giving up the pretense she stalked out angrily. "Your quite rude." she eyed the gaurd her gaze speculative. "Ok Mr. know it all. You want to know why I'm sneaking around? First I am ordering you to complete silence." she could see no other solution. Plus having a member of the royal gaurd helping her did have it's advantages. "To put it shortly the world is in trouble and I have to get some special spells? ok?"

Mariet

Mariet felt a blush creep up her neck at the gaurds words. He made her seem shallow with his questions. She didn't know why it bothered her that he thought poorly of her. She wanted to defend herself but Nalia came rushing out once again spontaneous perhaps reckless. She merely retreated to the shadows as always letting Nalia have her Tirade.

Darius

Darius heard his sisters excited voice as he approached her chambers. He shook his head ruefully. What was she getting herself into now. She would be the death of him. He saw her now speaking seriously to a gaurd while Mariet cowered in the back. He recognized the gaurd. Krat, he was always the quiet one but Darius had caught a glimpse of the true Krat. "Dear sister I hope you are not disrupting the poor man's peace of mind?"

Krat

He turned, his eyes focusing on the Princess, registering a hint of surprise. He came to attention for a moment, relaxing after she started speaking. He sheathed his greatsword, and went back to staring ahead, beyond the trappings of the palace.

"Fine. Just take a guard with you," he said softly. He turned around, noticing Prince Darius arrive. He quickly came to attention, saluting the prince.

Nalia

Nalia felt her temper rise at the gaurd, then her brother arrived and she took on the look of innocence with a flash. Mariet merely backed further away. She found Darius very intimidating. "Hello Darius" she smiled sweetly at him. "I figured he might get board out here all day and thought I'd chat with him?" she lied easily. She loved her brother to death but he also did not think much of her visions. He was constantly trying to stop her adventures and ideas.

Darius

She was lying of course. Darius knew his sister better then anyone. Though he sometimes thought Mariet knew more of her. "Your up to something but I don't have time for that now. There are some problems in a nearby town and I must investigate, father's orders. I merely wanted inform you he is not in a good mood today. It is best you steer clear." She nodded slowly used to her father's moods by now. He smiled then nodded to the gaurd before turning and exiting the way he came.

Krat

Krat dropped his salute after the Prince left, and went back to his post. He glanced lazilly at the Princess, who seemed none the happier, and at her maid, who seemed to be trying to disappear.

His gaze moved away, unfocusing, gazing beyond what he was looking at to once again gaze at whatever he saw.

Nalia

Nalia sighed softly her plans completely disrupted. She hated it when this happened. Then something occured to her, that Pixie had traveled from her realm to Athkatla. She must know of someway to travel to Earth. Or maybe her people did. It was definitly an idea "why didn't I think of it before" she muttered softly motioning Mariet to follow her back to here chamber. Now where had that little pixie gone?

Mariet

Mariet turned to follow Nalia but she looked once more at the gaurd her gaze curious. He intrigued her like no one else had. Why did he hide his true self? What was his true self? With his attitude though she doubted she would ever know. She sent him a smile filled with understanding. She to was considered an outcast, dimwitted and weak. Without another glance she turned and followed Nalia into her room.

Aannealliea Katrina du' Chaunsion

Aann watches the confrontation with the gaurd with amusement.
She shakes her head and decides against the impromptu battle scene she was about to imagine into being, when Nalia exits her room.
She silently laughs at Mariet. Then Darius Shows up and all she can think is "Damn he'd look tasty covered in honey"

She misses most of the rest of the conversation caught in her own somewhat twisted imagination, and is torn between following Darius when he leaves and her very serious responsibilty.

She reasons to herself " Nalia knows what to do now and how serious this is, she can take care of it." and speeds off to follow after her latest infatuation.
