Now that the Republic of Ireland has voted to expand the EU to include the previous Eastern Bloc countries waiting in the wings, the resources available to us are growing on an almost daily basis...

Will never happen. If the European superstate ever comes into being it will be still born.

Why? Because too many people, disgusted by the prospect of the total loss of democracy, will bugger off to pastures new.

European Unity?????

Thats an oxymoron, peeps! How many hundreds of years have they been trying to achieve that goal anyways? And if they achieve any type of unity, how long could it possibly last?

Hell, for that matter, why did so many people leave Europe in the first place and play a prominant part in forming the U.S.? Because of European Unity, I suppose?

You'll all be running around like goofy bag ladies on airplane glue within five years from eating your Mad Cow diseased beef.

mmmm world domination...

it matters not what the europeans do, because Aquila and I and our evil legions of terror will soon conquer the globe..

even if we didnt, europe will never be unified..

I'm surprised america hasnt tried it with cannada and mexico.. mainly, it would be between cannada and the US, because mexico could easily be forced into it.

The Maastricht criteria and the RDF

You and I have discussed this topic before at some length, pp. I can understand your enthusiasm for a counterweight to U.S. imperialism (which has become even more imperialistic than ever lately). However, the E.U. is run by bankers and big business, a highly undemocratic institution created with little popular participation. The Maastricht criteria impose "austerity" and hardship upon European workers, and essentially require European nations which join to dismantle their social welfare programs. Eastern Europe will mainly be used as a source of cheap labor and raw materials. Wages of European workers generally will be driven down. Ultimately, the E.U. will be just another imperialistic power like the U.S.

I also notice a great reticence on your part to talk about the proposed Rapid Deployment Force (RDF) . . .

As much as i would like to see it happen, it won't if for no other reason than national pride.

Right now, I think it is Greece, the UK, and one other country i can never remember, that refuse to use the Euro, partly out of pride.

If European countries cannot accept something as simple as a common currency, it is going to make anything else, alot harder.

Australia is no different.

Technically, we are a part of Asia, but our national pride refuses to believe it or accept it.

Instead, we say we are part of Australasia.... i mean wtf?!?!?!

It will never happen, pp. Know why?

One word.. 'France'.

They belong to you guys. Please keep them over there. And lock the door on the way out.

But if we liken the current status of the European Union...

with the status of America in its early days there are similarities.

Different languages, cultures and currencies being the most obvious.

So if the US could overcome their difficulties and become unified why not the EU becoming even more unified than it is now.

We do have the advantage of a common history, something early America never had and we are already becoming more unified through common laws applicable to all member states.

Although the UK is not in the common currency yet, we soon will be and as for national pride that really only exists among the older generation and a few hotheaded, extreme youngsters. The majority of Europe's youth have never known anything else but a common Europe in one shape or another.

Their voice is the one that will have to be listened to. Not that of the generation before them...
