When Is “USA” Hate Speech? When It Appears On The Side Of A Mosque…

Burlington Islamic Center USA

Two drunken teens may face “hate crimes” charges for tagging a Massachusetts mosque with the word “USA”.

Via Media Equalizer:

After two drunken teens were arraigned on vandalism charges Monday, Islamic leaders demanded the Sunday incident be classified as a hate crime.

Though police in Burlington, Massachusetts are chalking it up to an alcohol-fueled prank by 18-year-olds Cameron Cappella and Derrik Demone, Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan has signaled “additional charges” may be possible.

How could “USA” be considered a hate crime? According to the Boston Globe, Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) Executive Director John Robbins “has said he believes the graffiti reflects an offensive view that Muslims are not fully American.”

You now switched to two 'cool' emojis, instead of one…
Just for balance, I searched for an article that gives us an opposing view. This one seemed pretty good:

"CAIR Seeks Hate Crime Probe of ‘USA’ Vandalism Targeting Mass. Mosque

1.The graffiti, which appears to reflect a common Islamophobic theme that Muslims are not “real” Americans,” was discovered early this morning and reported to local police.

2.Several other incidents fit a pattern of increased hate-motivated crimes and bias incidents nationwide targeting persons and property associated, or perceived to be associated, with Islam and the American Muslim community:
- The same mosque has in the past been targeted by similar hate attacks. Other threats and violence targeting Islamic houses of worship ( in Texas, Kentucky, Virginia, Nebraska, Tennessee, Ohio, New York, and other states)
- Incidents of violence and threats targeting individual or groups of Muslims, and and the recent phenomenon of Armed anti-Islam demonstrations.
- Suggestion by Ben Carson that an American Muslim is not fit to be president.
Donald Trump’s apparent willingness to close down American mosques.

3.“With national political figures falsely claiming that American Muslims cannot be patriotic citizens, it is not surprising that Islamic institutions are targeted by those emboldened by the mainstreaming of Islamophobia,” said CAIR-MA Executive Director Dr. John Robbins. “We ask that state and federal law enforcement authorities investigate the apparent bias motive for this attack on a house of worship and that our nation’s leaders speak out against growing anti-Muslim bigotry.”
