When I Was a Kid....

WIWAK, New Year's Eve meant getting to stay up til midnight and banging pots & pans in the frigid air until our ears were ringing. It also meant watching tv: Dick Clark on ABC, watching the ball drop in Times Square, and we got sparkling cider to toast in the new year.

WIWAK we watched Dick Clark's Rockin' New Years Eve and when the ball dropped, it was time for the kids to go to bed. It was YEARS before I figured out that New York and Texas had different time zones and that I hadn't stayed up until midnight. :)

WIWAK I used to think I was cool when I told people in late December, "See you next year!"

Okay, so I actually still do that.

WIWAK New Years Eve was spent at home with my brother while my parents partied up the street after driving down Colorado Blvd to see those camped out for the Rose Parade. We banged pots and pans at midnight after watching the ball drop. We then went to bed so we could be up early to get to the Rose Parade to watch it sitting on planks resting between two rickety ladders!

WIWAK in my teenage years, we spent NYE on the Rose Parade route, guarding our float from the drunks who just wanted one rose!! We watched the parade in reruns on KTLA because we were too exhausted to stay up to watch it!!

WIWAK The kids on my block got together and shot the shit out of fire crackers on holidays. :)

WIWAK.....Speed Racer was always on at 3 pm M - F but Catechism was on Wednesdays at 3 pm as well....that was my first conflict with Religion ;) Btw, Speed Racer won out in the end

WIWAK I never realized how simple cartoon storylines were
Look today at creations like 'SpongeBob SquarePants', 'Adventure Time', and 'Regular Show'... And you miss the one simple for the other

If you look at old Looney Tunes and Disney cartoons they often operated on multiple levels...:)

My dad was the school principal...he was so cool...everyone loved him so much...I felt like a cool cat kid...

WIWAK on New Years Eve we used to watch Guy Lombardo and the Royal Canadians from the Waldorf-Astoria. Dick Clark came along years later.

When I was a teenage kid I got caught smoking the cigarette that my boyfriend and I were lighting fireworks with. My dad made me smoke half a pack of Winston cigarettes (red pack)..one after the other...till I must have been green enough that he took pity on me and let me stop. It stopped me from smoking ....

i miss going to the drive-in as a little litster. we have a drive-in theater (on the other side of town) but it's closed for the season; it will reopen in the spring.

I love drive ins ! Where I lived there was still one operating...hahaha...in typical Caribbean fashion, they used loud speakers instead of the little private speakers at each car...and it was park where you can and walk over too :)

So do I.... I feel the best way to go is in the pickup so you can spread out in the bed of the truck of a hatch back. I'm hoping to fit it in this coming spring. They don't open til about May or June around here cause of the long winter. But they no longer have the crazy speakers you sit on the windows. Now you bring along a portable stereo or use the one in your car and tune into a certain AM station. Pretty slick get up. Tibbs Drive In. *sigh What memories

For us here it's Sundance Kid and we didn't get a chance to go this past season :( I shall have to rectify that this year!
