After a 16-month wait this "Sopranos" season is two weeks from the end. Most of the reviews and criticism I've read about it have been mildly negative, and on certain points I'd have to agree.
It isn't that there haven't been brilliant parts, or compelling storylines. In fact, perhaps the biggest problem I've had with this season is that there have been too many stories going on for there to be a continuing narrative flow. A storyline appears, and then vanishes for weeks. Meadow hasn't appeared in FIVE episodes. We learned that Adriana was co-opted by the FBI, and then we only see her every other episode. Uncle Junior is on trial, yet he's barely on for two minutes.
I thought the biggest weakness of this season was the near-absence of Dr. Melfi, but in the last two episodes there have been some excellent scenes, especially tonight. I won't spoil it for everyone, but I think we haven't seen the last of Dr. Melfi.
What has really caught my attention is the music on the show. "The Sopranos" used music better than any show I can remember, but this year the music...well, there HASN'T been any music. The ending credits always used a song to bring the episode together or set the tone for the next show. Songs like "Tiny Tears" or "Gloria" took the place of incedental music or dialog and brilliantly advanced the story. That hasn't happened at all this year, and I really notice the difference.
Whattya think? Has the show gone downhill? Good as ever?
