We've all done it, I suspect. Late at night, looking for a story to read before bed; we tend to focus on the ones with the little red H like it's the Good Smutkeeping Seal of Approval. This week my somewhat rebellious nature led me to avoid all stories with a rating of 4.5 or better. I was surprised at how many good reads I found, in many ways much better stories than other, higher-rated, offerings.

Now, I don't particularly want to start a thread about why some readers vote the way they do. Plenty of threads on that topic already, I suspect, if folks wish to voice opinions of that nature.

What I would like to propose is that those so inclined point the rest of us to one little gem that, for whatever reason, does not, at least at the time of the posting, bear the coveted little red H. At least the title, the author, a link, and a blurb, please.

And now, I suppose. it is time for me to make my selection. I've read a number of truly enjoyable tales during my little quest, but one really stood out for me.

My suggested read is: Burning Bridges (4.45) by neonlyte

It's a lesbian tale, but really it's a love story. As the forward says, it is not intended as wank material. The pace, the style, the emotion, all are near perfect and all so believable, especially considering its economical length! Some of the lines convey the simmering passion in ways that few words can; they moistened my eyes in the best possible way. No, it's not a "Reach for the nightstand and hope your batteries are up to the task" story. It's a "Curl up under the blanket and go to sleep with a smile on your face" story. So much the better.

And now it's your turn. What story do you like? Old story, new story; Long story; short story- doesn't really matter. We know they're out there somewhere. I invite you to show the rest of us just one.

Thanks & Take Care,
Penny

One of my favorites is fairly new, but it didn't get posted with the other Rainy Day Challenge stories, so it hasn't gotten the attention I think it deserves: Thunder Beach, by Dranoel.

of course, I'm just a tad biased towards that story...

Truthfully, I never read based on the H or not, I don't even notice. I select reads based on the title and descript unless I am looking for something by An ah author.

Off the top of my head, I read several of Oggs Silverbridge stories without H's and enjoyed them immensly. Even though the subject matter isn't my norm or tailored to my orientation, the stories are delightful.

The Cage Crinoline
The Procession
Lisa's Petticoat

Great fun reads by a great author, even if they don't rank highly on the Wank-o-meter, they are some of my favorites on the site thus far.

Penny,

I don't know what to say. I'm quite embarrassed. It is extremely gratifying to have ones work pointed out so publicly.

The story was written to develop a convincing female/female emotional dialogue for a longer work. It was a test piece to see if I could 'hold' an audience. The PC's received for the story and your very kind words encourage me greatly.

My sincere thanks.

Note: My random Bullshit! post was not meant for neonlyte's stories which are my likes.

Do I assume the bullshit was for my stories that Colly recommended?

If so I can understand. They were written for a limited audience and they can be disconcerting for those who do not share that specific fetish.

Who's ever going to want to read story about a bunch of naked soccer ladies having multiple orgies with some European studs? Do you think I'd read such a rubbish?

Yep

I read stories written in the Sexual Role Playing forum. No "H's," hell, they don't even get votes, but there are some very talented writers of smut there.

If the works of Oggbashan are for a limited audience, then perhaps I am a limited reader because I hold his stories in high regard, if for no other reason they have the virtue of being different. That said, I can't claim the soccer series to be among my favorites within Og's collection, but there I stray a bit since this thread was meant to be about stories we enjoyed rather than ones we didn't.

Of Og's tales that I've read recently, I enjoyed "Don't Fall In" and his version of "Rapunzel," in addition to "Who sent the card?" which is to be found under Jeanne_d_artois:

None of the three are terribly long. I wish they'd been a bit slower and longer as each left a different sort of smile upon my face.

Take Care,
Penny

"Denial" by Conquered

Is one of the most disturbing, insane, and guiltily arousing erotic stories I've ever read--on Lit or otherwise.

It is honestly a no brainer why it's not rated with "H"'s... but if arousal through disgust... arousal through pure FEAR is your thing, and you have a penchant for the power of what is left UNSAID, this story takes no prisoners.

I love this story precisely because I'm so conflicted and upset by it. It is absolutely outrageous, and merely thinking about it gives me violent shudders.

Though it is against my principles to encourage him/her, try some of CV's stories, you can't vote on them, or send feedback, there is no way to tell how they appeal to the broader Lit readership. Most of the stuff I've read by CV is, at the very least, amusing, some is painfully honest, others display skill and insight way beyond the pranks he/she plays on this forum.
