What's your escape?

When you want time to yourself to rest, relax, gather your thoughts, where do you go? Do you do this on a daily basis? Weekly? Is it just you or do you allow others into your hideaway? IS it a place or do you merely create the required setting anywhere? If so, with what? Does your hideaway include any amenities or is it just you and your thoughts?

Myself, I take time out of each day to regroup and collect my thoughts. As of late, it's been in the mornings while my feet are pounding the pavement or dirt trails (snow covered now). It's early am, before the sun's come up, just me, the pup and as much distance as I can put between the world and myself. I've also found this "place", where my thoughts are free to roam, while riding. My gelding and I could seek refuge in the wooded trails back home - I miss that.

Seems like I stay awake anywhere from 5 minutes to hours on end trying to fall asleep, but thinking about everything that has happened and is going to happen tomorrow or in the future.

Sometimes I go to the gun range and shoot for however long I feel like...other times I work in the shop. And everyonce in a while...I take a drive up the mountain, then walk for a bit.

While I am at work I meditate in my room. Gets quiet and still in there. I hope that nobody ever discovers that I have the best room at work...I could lose it then.;)

Can you consciously shut it down? During high stress points in my life I had to turn to the doc for a little help in trying to get a few hours of much needed sleep.

So, does this help you - the pre-sleep musings or does it hinder your sleep patterns?

I sit in front of the computer at 1am. That's basically the only time I have to myself at all. Sometimes I don't even turn it on, I just contemplate.

I do it almost daily. The only people I share my time with are the people I see online (like you, Riles!!) or the people I email, and occasionally a non-sleeping child.

My hideaway is the basic home office, with all the amenities therein. The only thing here that's unique to me is the music I listen to while here.

Good question, Riles.

I go to a place call Top Of The World. You drive up this very windy, turny road which in itself is fun. Then when you finally get up there and get your car turned around...you are looking at this amazing view that takes your breath away. So depending on the temp outside, I either sit in my car and take in the view, or sit outside on top of the hill and meditate.

It's annoying as hell most of the times, but it's needed. Then I physically have to tell myself outloud that I'm going to sleep, so I roll over and fall asleep pretty soon there after most of the time.

I've never tried meditation. Did you study this with someone, or is it simply a zone you've nurtured yourself?

Don't do much, unfortunatly. That seems to be my problem.

I do alot of writing...and Rock Climbing when i find a few hours to go climb.

Climibing is my favorite escape..nothing better as far as I'm concerned:D

The only thing better is bouldering..which is what I end up doing more often then actualy real climbs.

Other then that...MUSIC MUSIC MUSIC...

This is touching on my next thread idea. Are you free in March? Could you be? I'm rented a cabin and I think I've found the one person who could truly appreciate a week away.

Your sleep doesn't get interupted by midnight musings?

I have to shut them down, or I'll drive myself insane and be up for weeks. It's happened.

Yes, my life often sucks beyond the telling of it. But I know sleep will make it all vanish, so usually I'm okay.

Stunning! Exactly what I was thinking, Tatianna.

I take a drive to the Hill Country...listening to music loud...just getting far away from my everyday life.

This may seem strange, but I like to visit the graves of my anscestors. The old German cemetaries where they are buried are quite fascinating....and quiet....so remote. I seem to be transported to another time when I'm there.

I've discussed this with friends before. Can you shut your brain down on cue? Do you do relaxation exercises to achieve this? I personally simply close my eyes, envision pure black nothingness and keep blocking any thoughts outside of "black" that enter my head.

I meditate and/or do my yoga. Spend time with my children. Visit with friends in a land far away. Read some great books I got with a gift cert from Christmas. Go dancing. Hmm...sleep. Dream. Astralllllllll!!!!

I've tried rock climbing, I suppose on one hand I can see where it's an escape. All thoughts are focused on the strategy, but on the other hand I find it highly frustrating when my route turns out to be a bad choice.

Okay, so what's the music you choose to create the mood?

Is there something you take prior to sleep? Perhaps a hot cup of tea, or a hot shower? Something to prepare your body and single to your brain that it's time to shut down? I've heard that routine is often needed if you are a "thinker" in bed.

Writing music. All conscious thought disappears as I feel myself into melodies tones and rhythms. Afterwards I feel refreshed and at peace, thoughts come back slowly in a manageable flow.
