What's Wrong with Brainiacs?

Tell me what you love about atoms.

What's not to love? It is pretty amazing that one can pretty much figure out the properties of everything if they really understood the atom and how they go together. I guess the problem is one generally does not really understand, but finding the understanding is quite fun. Lol - geek alert!

I am partial to the transition metal oxides, but since I don't know you that well, I don't think I want to go much further than that. Oh, and erbium will always have a special place in my heart.

I would love to know more about atoms, but, being more of a social sciences, as opposed to hard sciences kinda girl, I haven't really delved terribly deeply into chemistry. Plus, I'm really bad at math.

See, that just sounds sexy!

Lol - gets me turned on just talking about it. And we haven't even started talking about the electrical and optical properties!

Social sciences? What kind in particular?

OMG, I think I just got a little wet!

Social sciences? What kind in particular?
Political science; international relations, to be specific.

Maybe I can talk to you about transition metal oxides ... :D

What about international relations? I have heard people say they majored in it, but what does it mean? How do you apply that knowledge?

International relations as a topic varies greatly by institution, but my focus was on diplomacy and national security policy. Some focus on international political organizations, such as NATO and the UN.

this has been a good thread...amazing how you can get a more stimulating conversat on an intellectual topic here than on a "science forum" on myspace.

I usually just don't talk about technical aspects of my life or work other than just a gloss over when I first meet someone...most of the time it is just polite conversats anyway...a way of breaking the ice.

People talk about what they know best when they are nervous. For example, for me it was learning to say that I am presently working on a restoration project involving an endangered oyster and leaving it at that...let them ask more if they are interested...not I am developing microsatellites capable of resolving population admixture in Ostrea conchaphila with the goal of not only having a better understanding of the dynamics associated with their present genetic bottleneck but to facilitate in the selection of broodstock capable of assuring that genetic variability is maintained throughout the remnant populations. People are much more comfortable knowing I am a hell of a cook and that it was me that brought the kumos.

*sigh* How come you are so far away?

i find it amazing that as alloys...

cool from a liquid (almost gaseous state) they undergo not only physio changes from Liquid (L) to alpha/L - to beta /L - to alpha/beta solid, but also changes in their chrystalline structure as well, ie, Body centered cubic to face centered cubic, as example....

Hey - you are stealing my material (figuratively and literally) Find your own topic! Chicks in here dig materials science, and my martensitic transformation is much more impressive than yours.

Chemistry is not my best subject.who wants to help?

Lol - if you want to know about chemistry - I'm your man! Well, if you want to know alot about it, I am not, but I can fake it well enough ...

material science....

the latest hot thread (pun intended) are clothes made of a composite called titanium dioxide - it brings dirt and grime to the surface where it interacts with air and presto - the dirt and grime vanish.....soon we will be wearing clothes for months at a time without having to wash them...pretty cool eh?

You know, I started out empathizing with the plight of the brainiac who gets, not just shut down, but shut out by women. Now having scanned the last few days entries I see two trends. One there are ladies who like agile minded men and two; there is an awful of lot elitist nonsense being expounded. I say elitist because you dump out your resumes and then promptly grip about “dummies” who don’t appreciate your accomplishments. Well get off your asses, boys and girls, people don’t want to hear what you done, but what you can do now.

You want people to appreciate your mind, then make it work for you, not against you. You can start off by NOT classifying people as smart or stupid, but rather take on each person one by one as an individual. The simple truth is you don’t win respect by parcelling out disrespect. People are people, the world around, and they want to recognized for what they are. All people, yourselves included.

Okay, I’ve had my rant, I turn the board back over whoever wants to step up next.

LOL - I think we have scared all the women off. I knew it - one material scientist is cool, but put more than one in a (chat) room and everyone leaves in droves. That is why they like to keep us apart. Far apart. ;)

I can talk about the philosophical aspects of the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle and the effects that each interpretation could potentially cause in terms of understanding such awesome concepts as supervenience and alternate worlds theory if anyone's up for it. :p

However, the math for that stuff sends me screaming for the hills. Alas, I am only a humanities braniac.

hey soul catcher....

i dont see the elitist attitude that you are referring to.....i do see some people being clever and having fun - myself included....i am a math prof and my students will tell you i am the most down to earth, non elitist pig, they have ever had...........

outshined - the heisenberg uncertainty principle may soon be not so uncertain. we now have electron microscopes that can peer into the electron cloud....soon we will see exactly where these lil guys are and model them appropiately as opposed to chaotical dynamical systems. the real math wizard stuff is modeling string theory - that is truly heady stuff....

Problem is, string theory is supposed to unify Einstein and Heisenberg since the Locality Principle of Einstein's Theory of General Relativity is violated in Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle. If we can affect a particle on the other side of the universe that is entangled with a particle that we just observed, then that kind of sends some heads spinning and makes us wonder just how right Einstein was.

Still, I'm fascinated to see what route it takes. It's a topic that's slowly morphing from high level math and physics into metaphysics, needless to say.

the big issues with string theory ....

currently revolve (again pun intended) around the problems posed by the added, and required, dimensions above and beyond the space/time continuem - to that extent, outshined, you are right on in your assessment.

I'm taking a Physics course right now with a TA who's specializing in String Theory. Even he doesn't know what he's talking about any more, haha.

I've been attempting to learn about string theory for the past year and a half now, but it's just been a major hassle trying to absorb so many strongly mathematical concepts and ideas. It has been hard for me to wrap my brain around certain ideas and visualize them.

Problem is, I only have three dimensions to work with!
