What's with the bumping?

Time for another rant....

What is with the continuous "bumping" of threads when they haven't had a post for more than two fucking minutes? These threads never die, you know. Even if they fall off the last page of the forum they are still availlable in searches and anyone who is subscribed to them can always bring them up from their control panel. I mean, I assume everyone knows this, so what the fuck?

Number One: I hope no one is bumping their own thread. That's just tacky. (If no one wants to talk to you, get over it and move on.)

Two: If no one else is interested in someone else's thread, why do you feel the need to return it to the front page? For fuck's sake, leave it alone and revisit it when you have something useful to say. (Hint: "Bumping it back to the top," is not useful.)

My own thread isn't anywhere near the front page. (For all I know, it's already fallen into the archives.) You know how much I care? Not one little bit. When someone says hellp or posts a comment about the pictures, it magically pops back out into the open. And I didn't have to do a thing! Isn't that amazing?

Wait, wait! It just occurred to me. Now I know how some people get to 20,000 posts. Ok, cool ... if I post a bunch of bumps every day ... let's say fifty ... it will only take me ... (quick finger math) ... thirteen fucking months (!) to get to 20,000 posts. Or I could just shoot myself in the head and get it over with.

Personally, I do it because when I find a pic thread that I really like, I want to make sure it (and the people posting pics in it) gets as much exposure as possible. Kind of a "Hey look what I found, this is really awesome and everyone else should see it" impulse. Threads move up and down so often and so quickly in the Amateur Pics forum that even a very popular thread can get buried quickly if the original poster isn't updating it with new pictures on an extremely frequent basis, and a lot of times people (especially new members) don't really dig very far beyond the first page.

For what it's worth, I know that bumping can be fairly annoying so I do it sparingly. Though I was contemplating replying to this thread with just "bump," to get on your nerves... but I thought better of it.

Agreed...some people's need for attention IMO, but whatever. If it's good, it'll catch someones attention

Once again, I gotta agree with you. If it's good, someone will more than likely have a positive comment about the pic or pics. If you want to pop in and say hello, cool do your thing. But like E said "Bumping it back to the top," is no where near a positive comment or a hello.

Yeah chances are you may piss someone off with this thread, but like you, it annoys me when I go into a thread to post something and it is completely fucking off topic. What is wrong with staying on topic?

I had thought of starting this thread just to bump it myself a thousand times a day, but then I remembered that I don't fucking care, so that plan wasn't going to work.

Your reasoning falls short when the thread in question is so full of useless bumps that it is no longer a beautiful thing but instead just page after page of people saying, "Hi!" Ugh, how lame.

OMG, don't get me started on that! I was once told that "just because I started a thread doesn't mean it belongs to me, so it's perfectly fine to hijack a thread" if you feel the topic isn't your cup of tea. I nearly went the fuck OFF on this person. Once again, my apathy saved the day.

Well, a lot of thread-starters that I've interacted with here in AmPics do enjoy simultaneously using their threads as a way to keep in touch with the other posters. It can be irritating when you have to surf through pages of chit chat and small talk to get to the actual pictures, but it seems that for a lot of people who start threads here, making the small talk with their "fans" on the thread is as much a part of the fun as is actually posting pictures of themselves. I guess it's also part of the reason that indexes are becoming more and more widespread. I've also seen threads in the past where the thread-starter has chided (albeit partially in jest) the thread's followers for letting the thread fall off the front page through the course of the day.

you've obviously never looked in GB have you?
you'd shit yourself sideways with the spam and bumping

I agree on part
but AM threads also a way of conversing with your fellow AMers
most of my threads are pretty dead
but have gotten more lively with the addition of two friends, one of which we get into chats and such with, though I try to break it when I notice, albit not hard

either way, I find conversing fine
but standard usless spam its annoying
reading through people's convos with the thread starters nice sometimes but the 'hi ur s0 h0t 1 w4nna f0k u h4rd' and such is very annoying, but sometimes flatering

ive bumped my thread...only because id like to keep it going...the same one...and not having to start over...its a pain in the ass to start over...i dont feel bad...dont feel lame...or tacky...others bump my thread for me when i dont...i dont do it every day...just everyonce and awhile...

Keep it going? Why would it stop? I have had periods of inactivity on my thread for months at a time and it's still right there in my Subscribed Threads for me to add to anytime I want. It never dies completely - it might not be visible from the forums, but the thread will still be available in the archives and will be immediately moved to the front page whenever someone adds a new post.

Bumping your own thread is like pulling a picture of your car out of your wallet to show off to your friends, but they all know what you drive and they don't care.

I stand by my "tacky" statement.

I bumped my own thread once. Now I feel all ashamed.

Well, now you know better, so don't let it happen again. :)

You sir, are a sorely needed voice of reason at this site.

Well, now we get to find out if Eskerb is more handsome when he is angry, huh, Kinky?

Funny you mention that. My co-workers saw the picture of me on my web site and it was the first time any of them had seen a smile on my face. I'm usually not happy when I'm at work and the next day they were all talking about the smile in the picture. LOL.

Of course, they're all just a bunch of slimy cocksuckers, anyway.

(By the way, I knew it was only a matter of time before some fool bumped this thread.)

The whole bumping thing is annoying as fuck. Some threads are nothing but "BUMP" after "BUMP" who wants to read 42 pages of that?

If a thread was meant to die of inactivity, let it go.
