being warned about a possible terrorist attack on the banks in the North East?

Will it stop you going to one? Maybe.

Will it start a run on the banks? No.

Would not a warning to the banks security staff have been sufficient? Probably.

What plans are there if something does happen? Don't know.

Is it a real threat? No

Is it a story made up by the authorities to keep people on their toes because you're all losing interest in the "war" on terror. Yes.

So what's the fucking point?

ppman

The single only point in warning we Americans of possible terrorist attacks was so you could start this tittilating thread.

You see?

No-one's going to take any notice.

The Administration needn't have bothered...

Well I sure am keeping it quiet from Bush.

I don't want to give that man any straw to clutch...

Just comparing things with the UK.

We have posters on permanent prominent display warning us of unattended packages.

All of us, after so many years, have a "keep an eye out for a bomb" mentality.

I don't recall ever hearing a Government warning about a possible imminent terrorist attack.

All of us (or most of us anyway) know what to do in the case of spotting an unattended package.

Our security people, from top people in the security forces to store detectives are the ones who are informed.

The general public goes around in blissful ignorance doing our daily deeds and not getting into a state of panic over what most times is a false alarm.

And things remain calm.

Well p_pman I was out and about today! I even went to the bank. Quess what? Everybody was calm! Believe it or not we are actually going about our daily lives. So if you are of the belief that we are running around scared shitless you are mistaken. If the Peace Loving Muslimes hit America again so be it, we will deal with it. Perhaps it would wake people up to the fact that this really is a war.:) :p

I've tried

To not go where I'm about to go but I have to ask you something ppman, do you have a life at all? Damn near every time I see your post you're bashing the United States. Maybe one reason brits know what to do (if your word is to be taken serious) is that history shows while your fighting men and women have courage and will fight, your nation was almost wiped out till the US got involved and helped, and I won't get into the time frames because frankly your post bore me.
This forum lets anyone say what they want, but I haven't seen many such as yourself constantly trash as bash England or any other nation for that matter. It gets old.
If your opinions matter as much as you think they do, what are you doing here? Seems to me most folks on Lit want to relax, have some fun and enjoy themselves, then there are those that feel the need to say trivial shit to impress whom?
Well I sure am keeping it quiet from Bush. I don't want to give that man any straw to clutch...

Well hell I'll sure sleep good tonight knowing your have his back

And if you feel the need to even respond to my post, send it on PM, I doubt I'll visit this one again

PP Man, believe it or not, we watch out for things here too. Just because we go about our daily lives does not mean we are unaware. If we stopped going about our daily activities, we would be victims of terrorism. And I am not slamming you, but have you actually been to the US since the WTC went down?

Yes. Went to a place called Saratoga Springs in Nov. Passed through NYC on the way.

And even then, so near to 11 Sept, there were no baggage checks at a restaurant I went to or a bar I visited.

But this thread is really about the US administration shouting "wolf" too often. Especially when the source of this information about the banks is meant to be one of the senior men in al Qaida.

It just doesn't ring true...

:)

You are right. While I am minimally informed about the bank incident, I would agree that from what I have heard it does not ring true. BUT if it is true and they didn't inform the public, we'd be pissed about it. So I d=say, no harm done in informing us.

Also a note (pardon my pain killer induced ramblings please) about hte American unawareness that foreigners seem to often note. Here is my theory;

America is a false democracy. I don't even think that is arguable. We like to think we have the power to change things but really we don't. (I say "we" because I live here but I am citizen of Iceland.) You can vote but that's about it. If you are opposed to the President doing something, can you really stop it? No. You can shout all you want, but that is it unless you want to get radical and dangerous. So, I think that after so long of this, Americans are just kind of "Alright, we will read the news and act political, then sit on our asses and watch TV." What else is there to do about it? The strange part is that I cannot really blame them. As I said before mos tpeople living in the USA have good lives. Why complain about it. Why shake things up. I think this is a pretty great country. I won't slam it though it has it's problems like anywhere else does. Just an observation. Like I said pardon my drug induced rambling.

Demerol rocks.

Okay so I stopped back, hell I'm killin time before I go to work, anyway ....

A few good points but also a wrong statement, please don't become upset, just trying to make you aware....

You're right that most American's sit on their ass not doing a damn thing, we've become a nation of sheep because we've come to enjoy our freedom, our video games, our internet and our fast food and damn to hell those that mess with these things, but as far as we can't stop it? We can, we the people made this Nation and we have the means to not only suggest a change, we can force them.
A single person, a citizen can draw up a resolution to change a law or anything else, and have it presented to the government. Can or will they find blocking stones in the path? Sure they will but if it's within their heart and they have the conviction of it's reason, then they should push, fight scream and yell all the way to the vote.
It's basic civics, each person has a voice, but if we let it be hushed them who's to blame?

PP I just supported you on your other thread which is bloody rare for me, but I've gotta ask you... are you shitfaced. This thread is a real no brainer pal...

first person to dig thru my shit in a resturaunt gets a nice Nazi salute.

is this something they do on that little island of yours? wouldn't suprise me in some respects, but still.

Not in times of low alert. But in times of high alert, yes.

Though sometimes public buildings have a constant bag search but not continuously. Sometimes you go straight through, other times you open your bag up put your arms out to your side and get scanned.

:)

Please don't take this as support for anything else on this thread but what would you think having given your salute if the next man through the door was carrying a bomb that exploded and killed everone in the establishment except, for the purposes of this argument, you?

That is a reality that some of our people in London have faced in the last thirty years.

'bout what i expected.

however, since we don't have the IRA after us and seems that terrorists striking us seem to be stuck up on hijackings and airplanes for the most part, i don't think any of that is called for here in the US right now. the metal detectors and whatnot are in the big targets (gov't buildings, tall buildings, etc.).

besides, i see a certain internationally known fast food chain being hit with a suicide bomber way before any regular resturaunt. maybe a bomb in a happy meal. a real big mac attack.

(sorry, being serious is just too damned straining)

It is insular thinking like that that will make it easy for terrorists to fuck with you as a nation... there is a reason it is called Terror ism. Who knows where the next target will be...

How about a crowded sports arena... a group of malls... schools or hospitals... These fuckers don't give a shit what they hit as long as they do maximum "collateral damage"

Enjoy your burger...

i'd say to myself, "see, self! told ya! did it do them any good to look thru my shit?" to which i'd reply, "hell no. it's too easy these days to rig up a bomb powerful enough to take out the resturaunt without having even stepped in the building. for pete's sake, they could just run and smash thru the window (assuming there is a window there) and blow us all to smeg. looking thru the bags gives the people doing it time enough to go 'oh shit, a bomb!' before they get their ass blown off." "you've got a point, self. they could even rig up a car bomb or something and just drive it into the resturaunt if they wanted, too."

just too many ways to do it to worry overly much about it. the searches may comfort the occupants, but how effective are they against a determined opponent?

OK it's not effective at all but the comfort of the occupants, your citizens, surely has some validity.

I am no lover of frisking and searching (unless of course it is a she who is doing it....... :) ) but it does give comfort to people that something is being done.

We all know that there is little defence to a determined terrorist but why let the people believe that the authorities don't give a shit.

i think it's the physical act of somebody going thru my stuff that just gets me all pissed off. the metal detectors and such don't bother me, just the physical searching.

don't ask me why. might be my obsessive-compulsiveness, i don't know.
