Hi Guys,

Help me out here please...

What's the difference between a State Penertentury (probably spelt wrong!) and a Federal Penertentury? I'm English so not too hot on your justice system, but would be interested to know as a prison scene features in what I'm writing at the moment.

Cheers,
John.

The crimes you go to each for, mostly. Federal crimes are ones that cross state borders, like mail fraud, interstate flight or trafficking of one kind or another, and also kidnaping and some other things like that that the federal government made their own, such as organized crime stuff.

State laws prohibit the usual things like larceny, robbery, murder, rape, burglary.

County lockups are usually within shouting distance, almost, of the courthouse. People awaiting trial often do it there, and a lot of the population doing short time for misdemeanor offenses will be there.

How much detail do you need?

The state pen will hold that states worst offenders. In some states, Like mississippi there is only one state pen (parchment) here in New York there are several. The state pen is usually a max or in some cases a super max. Most states will have a number of medium security, and minimum security facilites as well. As well as separate facilities for women. Everyone in a state pen commited their crime in that state.

The federal pen holds people who have been convicted of federal crimes. many already enumerated. In the federal pen, the offender most likely did not commit his crime in that state. For many years the federal pen at Ft. Leavanworth in Kansas i think, served as the countries detention center for soldiers convicted of civil crimes, but held under military jurisdiction.

Conned, nothing! :) Twas much fun and I sent the poor lady 4 or 5 to choose from! :D

This is kind of off the subject, but I once got a ticket while driving through Yosemite National Park. I wasn't about to pay it and I wasn't going to stick around for my court date so I beat it back to Illinois.

A few months later I got a letter from the FBI. It seems they're the law enforcement arm of the Federal Park system.

I paid the ticket pretty fast.

The conjugal visits at Fed were typically in private. When he was in the state pen, we didn't even get to use a trailer. Had to do it right there in the visiting room with everyone else.

Federal is better.

Personally, I would advise that the pair of you choose some creature other than waterfowl, or you could find yourselves in the same kind of soup that is at present being dished to the American Family Life Assurance Company by the United Poultry Concerns, Inc.

My concern for the pair of you may seem petty, even a bit hysterical, but I do assure you AFLAC has already considerably ruffled the UPC’s feathers.

Even such a prestigious periodical as FORBES MAGAZINE has reported their strenuous objections, under the headline “Quack Flak Whacked AFLAC.”

You HAVE been warned!

You won't be laughing when it's your turn for conjugal visits.

Oh, I'm not! I thought it would be fun at first, but what with all the families coming in and out, the mood was never right. You'd think conjugal visits would be romantic, what with all the stern-looking guards with their billy clubs and their stun guns and uniforms and stuff, and all those sex-starved inmates. But it's not that great.

By the tenth or twelth visit, you're pretty much over it.

Thanks for the heads up. Might have to cancel the one I have scheduled for next week.

or

Find a way to incorporate the stern looking guards, handcuffs, billy clubs and uniforms. Spice and all...

damn: I missed your edit! Just wanted to say, ":D"

Hello all,

Thanks for all the replies- especially Cantdog.

Okay, so basically what I'm writing (a movie script) reads like this so far:

RALBOVSKY
I’d hardly describe you as innocent, Mr Duritz. I saw your file: auto theft, burglary, larceny. Okay, you got more professional with age, but you didn’t get anymore innocent.

He turns to Kean and mocks:

RALBOVSKY (Continued)
You see the type of low-life you’ve been associating with, Miss Kean? Oh, you’re as clean as the Queen of England by the way... Well, you were.
(To Duritz)
You did two years of a five year sentence in Attica in 1990. Two years! Who did you have to blow for that, Mr Duritz?

DURITZ
I looked for your father but he was always busy.

Does that sound right? Would you go to Attica for either auto theft, burglary or larceny (by the way, what exactly is larceny?) commited in New York or New Jersey?

Many thanks,
John.

LARCENY

Illegal taking and carrying away of personal property belonging to another with the purpose of depriving the owner of its possession. If the accused has taken the goods under a claim of right, however unfounded, he has not committed a larceny.

But, whatever you do, never get yourself accused of mopery.
